  • Using double sided tapes externally?

    Hi Folks

Just wondered what peoples thoughts are on using strong double sided tapes like HDF externally? I’ve never really trusted it before, but I am thinking of using it to attach some rails to an external sign that will then be attached with clips to posts. Normally I would rivet through the face end of story, but it won’t help the look of the sign as it has a vinyl laminated on top to give it a uniform colour. Didn’t want to spoil the nice smooth finish with rivet heads, so I thought tape for the rails – it’s supposed to work externally? Any opinions gratefully received.

    Spooky

Good VHB tape like 3M will work no problem. there "is" a proceedure for applying so please follow it properly or stand to lose the sign. 😕

I use vhb tape all the time. As rob says, as long as you ‘play by the rules’ it should work for your use easily.

I would talk to your local 3M rep too, not all 3M tapes are the same, we tend to use several types here, they have a very good tape for aluminium to aluminium, very thin great adhesion, then there are thicker tapes which we use for aluminium and plexi, there are tapes that work really well with powdercoated surfaces, as not all tapes work with powdercoat.

Its important to let the tapes harden especially in colder winter climates like up here.

Preparation is important clean surfaces with isopropanol. we have signs that have been up years with tape.

The glass panels in the roof of Chigago’s airport are stuck using VHB as are parts of aeroplanes.

Thanks guys, very interesting. Think I’ll give it a go and promise the client that I’ll put it right if it fails! My main fear is water ingress between the sign and the rails, maybe some clear silicone around the edges would solve that problem?
