  • Use Application Tape or Not, please advise?

We’ve had a Movano Van in today to wrap the rear quarters, and then apply some full colour print over the top.

As it was budget job we opted for a different material than the usual 3M IJ180. It has no air release, and is uber stretchy. We printed it on Wednesday Laminated late on Friday, installed today. So I don’t think it’s an outgassing problem.

It’s a swine to fit. I’m now debating applying app tape over it tomorrow AM and see if that helps, then remove the app tape and work the recesses?

Would you app tape something like this up?

Might as well, if only due to the irregular shape.

    Cheers Jon.

Thought so after struggling with the first side. Was already committed to fitting it by then.

I tried a piece with app tape on and worked better, just squeegied across the whole thing, ignored recesses etc then worked it in after removing app tape.

Printed another one and left to outgas overnight, not ideal but best of a bad situation.

Let’s see how good my technique is at 6am tomorrow applying it!

If stretch is an issue I would apply application tape.

Proper Out gassing is a combination of several things…
"time" is one but you need it situated in such a way it can properly out-gas.
hung is best. there is several ways but wont go into that just now.

we were clearing a jobs area for prints on Friday. some miss-prints had been stuck amongst stored jobs and had been there at least 6 months.
we lifted them out to bin them and on unwinding them, they reeked of solvent. still hadn’t out gassed. they had been loose wound and stuck in amongst other jobs. so time is not good enough on its own and varies greatly in time even when properly done.

    taping that graphic…
Yes i would tape it up and apply it.
the shape of it for a start will create issues and the circles will ant to curl in on them self when being applied.
the shape will also promote tears where the circles join and have corners. making lifting and laying hard.
apply the whole thing with a rectangle of application tape over it. once everything is on and squeegee’d down.
remove the tape to expose the vinyl "bridging" the recesses.
now apply the recessed areas as you would with a wrap.

    hope this helps.

    Thanks Guys,

    The applications tape helped immensely.

We were using Metamarks MDX-B, and yesterday I was cursing it, but it appears to be down to my technique. (which I thought and is why I didn’t name the brand originally)

Attached is a pic of the finished job.
