  • URGENT HELP !! My Epson 7880 keeps losing black.

Firstly , let me apologise for my 1st post being a request for help. I’ve been a member here for a few years, but have never posted.

    OK, here is the problem….

Epson 7880, 18 months old. Has had about 450mtrs of 24" canvas through it.

Couple of days ago, the matt black stopped coming through after about 3feet into a print with about 50% black coverage.

Did a nozzle check, and pretty much every nozzle wasn’t firing.

Printer would then automatically perform a nozzle clean and re-print the nozzle check pattern. 100% of the nozzles where then firing with no problems.

I would re-send the print job over, but exactly the same thing happened, after about 3feet, the matt black would drop again.

Nozzle check/clean would get all nozzles firing again.

This process was repeated several times with the same result.

Spoke to an ex-Epson guy who said "almost certainly needs a new ink damper".

Fitted a new damper to this colour, but problem is still exactly the same.

Anybody have any ideas what to replace next? Pump? Head?

If I can’t resolve this myself, does anybody know of an independent engineer in the Northwest of England? (I’m based on the Wirral, Merseyside).

Thanks for looking in guys, and again, sorry for asking for help on my first post.

I would say damper too but having replaced that and it still happening….?

It’s unlikely to be cap or pump or you wouldn’t be able to get the ink flowing again at all. When you replaced the damper, did you replace the rubber O ring too?

Just want to bump this one guys as I have just started experiencing the same problem with my 7880 but with the yellow cart. I can clean the nozzles and get it firing again no problem but after one print they all stop firing again….

I’m at a bit of a loss, do I need to change the damper too?

Seems to be the correct solution to this sort of problem Mo……….. Oh and don’t forget to change the "O" ring as well :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:

I don’t remember ever hearing back from the guy who posted the original question but I guess no news is good news. I always replace the o ring when replacing a damper, even on aqueous machines such as these Epson’s. The parts are very inexpensive and if you have a reasonable understanding of how the printer works then it can’t hurt to give it a try. Let me know if you have any questions as I’ve had these things in bits many times now 🙂
