URGENT HELP, app paper too long in sun
Posted by Alistair Richards on 31 July 2007 at 18:52HELP
A customer just phoned me up, whom I supplied an ashby sign with a laminated digital print applied to a few weeks ago. I told him to leave the application paper on to protect the signs until he put them up, but wasn’t expecting him to leave them in the sun. Now’s he complaining because he can’t get the app paper off and I didn’t tell him not to leave them in the sun.
Haven’t seen them yet, but anyway of getting it off easily, wallpaper stripper??
Cheers

I’d just soak the face of the applie paper with warm soapy water (soap will stop the water evaporating of so quickly) paper will break up but should make the glue go stringy and release…you might need to repeat this process several times but it will come off and not damage the print.
-
Meths also works a treat – breaks down the bond the adhesive has on the paper…but not the actual glue or paper (won’t go soggy). Usually faster than soapy water too – just soak it – then catch it at it’s optimum before it evaporates!!

so will it still not do any damage ?? don’t use meths so I don’t know, just erring on the side of caution 🙄

Yeh, only said meths as it was laminated!!
An unlaminated print might suffer a little depending on type, mind you, I’ve accidently sprayed meths all over prints I’ve done before & not damaged them in any way whatsever.

Cheers All,
I’ve got the signs back here with me now, and the app paper is really stuck on. Tried all the methods, but nothing seems to be impregnating the paper. Once that is scraped off, the glue can be removed ok, but it’s getting through the paper that is taking forever.
Any more ideas please, pretty please.

Are you giving the water enough time to soak in?
Wet a towel, lay it on the app paper, and go out for a meal. Remove when you come back 😀
-
can you post a photo alistair (on another forum)…..just to give us a wee idea (might help) 😀

I’ve just put them in the garden with towels over to soak overnight, i’ll let you know what they’re like in the morning, pics etc.
-
You need to keep the towels damp Alistair. If they dry out overnight then it will all have been a waste of time.
An hour or so should do the trick.

Good luck Alistair,
hope you get it sorted.Wallpaper steamer?
Why did you use app tape though? were they contour cut?

Had them soaking with towels all night, App paper still stuck really hard.
Here

Ashby applied the prints when I bought the sign, I just thought it made sense for the customer to leave it on until he installed them, thought he would only take a couple days, not 3 weeks and leave them in the sun.
Gonna try the pressure washer in a bit. 😕
-
Is that clear tape Alistair? if it is I don’t think water will work.
-
Finally managed to get it done, Pressure washed which got off the first layer of paper slowly, then soaked with turps, scrubbed and scraped, then soaked with turps, scrubbed and scraped, then soaked with turps, scrubbed and scraped, then soaked with turps, scrubbed and scraped, then soaked with turps, scrubbed and scraped, then soaked with turps, scrubbed and scraped, then soaked with turps, scrubbed and scraped, then soaked with turps, scrubbed and scraped, then cleaned down.
2 of these, but done now, what a pain in the back side.
Thanks for your help anyway people.

Too right, from now on, I’ll provide all signs without any app tape still on, or tell them to keep out of the sun.
