  • Unable to cut from Coreldraw/Signtools 3 to Summa D60

Posted by Declan Holland on 4 April 2008 at 23:55

    Hi all,

I use Coreldraw 9 and the "Signtools 3" plugin to design my signs.
I have a summacut D60, and normally I use the ‘Summa Queue’ feature on the Summa Cutter Control software. So to cut a sign/text , from Coreldraw I would select what I want to cut, then export it (as a HP-GL file) to the Summa Queue (Summa Hot folder) and then the Summa Cutter Control software sends this HP-GL file to the D60. It works good for me, and I use the USB port on the D60 to connect to my PC.

What I’d like to do, is use the ‘CUT’ option in "Signtools 3" to cut my signs.
I’ve set it up following the instructions on the ‘Signtools 3’ website (www.asigns.com), it works when use the ‘Serial’ cable to connect the Cutter to the PC, but it fails to work when I’m using the USB interface.

Has anyone else out there managed to get this working using the USB interface. I use a laptop for customer jobs onsite, however the laptop doesn’t have a serial port, so I’m still using the ‘export as HP-GL’ option I talked about above when connecting to the cutter using a USB cable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Declan

    Declan

I’ve always used serial cable to operate my Camm1 from Signtools, so unfortunately don’t have a fix to your USB issue, however I would advise you to email ASigns directly in Australia with your serial number and problem – we have done this a few times in the past and found them to be extremely helpful.

    Good luck

Just noticed that the set up info for the D-1020 refers to a USB connection as below:-

If you are using a USB connection you may have to install the Roland Windows driver that comes with the plotter, so that the USB port can be selected in SignTools.

Obviously that’s a different model of cutter but it may be worth a try.

Hello, Ive been having a LOT of problems with software, so its interesting to read your problems Declan and I wonderhow you resolved them in the end. Basicly over the past year and very recently I have upgraded everything; Signtool patches/ newer version of Corel (12) using USB ports/ Computer cleaned of like new BUT still cant get Cutter to CUT when Cut button pressed. However it will cut from a Test cut thru the computer.
Previously I was using CorelSelect Edition/ using Ports/com1/and Signtools. In desperation I have used Winplot but found it difficult setup to use and now for SOME reason it wont work properly anymore, it seems to stall or work sometimes and then not !!! Anybody got any advise? Thanks for any help, John

Thanks for getting back, Hugh. I will check out winplot again but really I’d like to try and get my corel/signtools running properly again if possible.

i’m not sure what signtools is, but you shouldn’t really need to do anything once you’ve got corel and winplot.
simply design in corel, click on the winplot plug-in button, and up it comes, tell it it has a new roll, tel it to cut, job jobbed.

    hope ya get sorted.

I think signtools relies on vba (open to correction) Does your version Corel have vba?

Hi Alan and Hugh, vba !! wots that Alan?
Basically I bought my Summa D60/Corel Select Ed and Signtools 3 as a package from a well known ‘online Co’ about 4 years ago with me being an innocent vinyl virgin !
Things started going wrong during last winter/ early spring (online man told me very helpfully ‘ Oh dont deal with Corel/signtools3 anymore Its not best package really ‘ Great I thought, Thanks a lot.
Signtools 3 in Australia are helpful and it was suggested I upgrade Windows (which I did to XP) and upgraded to Corel12.
BUT I STILL have same prob that my computer man (who I have a lot of confidence in) cannot sort ???
At the mo I’m hand painting a sign but when I can Im going to check Hughs suggestion and investigate winplot more. Thanks John

VBA is visual basic and Corel (Word + others) has this to enable macros to run some automated routines, it’s basically a language. There are free macros and little applet type routines available that can add extra functions to programmes like Corel. A good source for these and a better explanation can be found at http://www.oberonplace.com and http://www.macromonster.com although some of these may not run on earlier than X3.
I’m not sure if Signtools uses any of this but if VBA is not installed then obviously some bits if any may not work. By default I’m not sure V12 installs VBA, you can check by going to ‘tools – visual basic – play if this does not appear than you may need to install it from your original disk.
Be aware that some versions may not have VBA at all and these include OEM/Elements type versions and also academic versions.
VBA as listed from the above sources can add some very useful features to Draw and are well worth exploring.

Hello all, I read with interest this stuff about signtools 3, as I have just bought it from its source in Australia; alongside coreldraw x4, with a brand new pc system set up for graphic handling.

I’ve just hooked it all up, serial port connection, to my anagraph elite 60 plotter, and it won’t cut.

I have been running this plotter for 7 years and had to update software but kept the plotter because its rock solid.

I am willing to look into using winplot, if anyone has any advice and background info on this or signtools3 then I’m all ears, as I’m unable to work without my cutter!

P.S. I’m still awaiting a reply from the usually very helpful Asigns, makers of signtools3.

    Many thanks in advance…!

    Hi Chris,
sorry to hear your having problems ! I posted questions earlier re signtools. I havnt made progress with my problems and I am waiting for my computer man to return ! and help.
Andrew at signtools in Aussie has been helpful in the past although I am sorry to say he has not responded to my last 2 emails of two weeks ago ! Even to send me a new verification code, so Im a bit disappointed. Maybe he needs another reminder from you and time difference etc. I enjoyed using Signtools3 , until problems set in, since then its been difficult , time consuming and annoying !!!
Other members have suggested winplot and ways of using just corel too on its own, and Im sure you will get a lot of advise, best of luck. John
