    Hi all
This is a new one on me, we have been asked to produce some signs with approx 6 languages. The customer has tried google translate but this apparently doesn’t make sense to the nationality it should.

Has anyone ever used someone they would be happy to recommend?

    Thanks in advance

Garry it’s a minefield. Automated translations are OK for getting the gist of a message but can be entirely incorrect too (same words can have different meanings etc…). A computer process doesn’t know in what context you are using the word(s). The problem is they are a literal translation which doesn’t always translate logically. If the client want’s you to use the output from a translator, then get them to provide the output to you. Otherwise it’s going to be on your shoulders.

Google translate is one – try it out here

    Totally agree with Neil.

I won’t translate text for customers simply because if it goes wrong, you get the blame and potentially all the associated costs to put it right.

Most of my customers who want something in a foreign language will provide the text first and ask if I can do it. I then do a quick check on Google translate to make sure I’m not being asked to do anything rude or offensive, double check my software will allow me to do any special characters required and then advise the customer accordingly.

Never used anyone but if I ever needed to and wanted it to be 100% accurate, I’d Google ‘translating services’ and pay someone to do it professionally. Will obviously cost a few quid but that way you have a comeback if it isn’t right. There are quite a few that come up so should be able to find a competitive rate.

Similar consequences to that experienced using the infamous Hungarian Phrase book 😕

    Thanks for your input guys.

I have said pretty much the same to the customer but wanted to make sure.

    Hi Gary,
what languages are you looking for? My sister runs a translation agency, I can ask her to look at the final proof if you like to see what they think??

    Cheers
