  • trainee wages????

Posted by 3 wise monkeys on 11 December 2003 at 11:57

    Dear all,
any advice would be great as this is the first time we’ve needed to recruit outside of known individuals

we now have a a full time position for a trainee. hours mon- fri 8.30 – 5.30

We are giving long term full training in all aspects from cutting, weeding through to fitting.

What wages should we expect to pay a keen person..??
We don’t want to under / over pay. but do want to keep him/her interested..
(We like two people we’ve interviewed 1 is 16yrs, 1 is 21yrs. Both seem keen and are well presented)

    thanks in advance

    rick

    Vivid,

you’ve got the wrong end of the stick…

We see the trainee as an investment but don’t want to under / over pay.

Most / all of us at some time have been the ‘monkey’ receiving peanuts but that’s not the kind of environment we want to create

    HI Rick,

Going on your area, i’d say a starting wage of £5.00 for the 16yr old and £5.50 for the 21yr old.

Explain to them that it will be reviewed after a 3 month trial period and that the rate of pay will depend on their commitment and ability.

You could offer a bonus system in terms of commision for any work they bring into the company, say 10%, as that would encourage them become a salesperson for your business as well.

Didn’t get the wrong end of the stick…..I always pick up the clean end 🙁

You took my reply the wrong way Rick 🙂

What I ment was….What I think you are trying to achieve (!)

Paying a fair wage for the right candidate with incentive to be a company minded employee who down the line has a skill and is rewarded for his / her efforts.

Yes we have all / most been paid peanuts at some time and when we become more skilled expect to get more peanuts. But many stay on the same peanuts for a long time while the boss takes the piss to recover his / her investment.

I wish you good luck Rick personally I think its not just financial reward.
A pat on the back although doesn,t pay bills is encouraging.

Going back to my days in Electronics I worked for the worst then the best company for staff / boss relations.

The first Company Director couldn’t even manage a well done most of the time as he forgot he started on the ground floor at a drawing board. The other Company Directors were the other end of the scale always a pat on the back a bonus or a bottle of bubbly at the end of a good month and a Financial Director who even made the tea of a morning quite often for everyone.

As an idea Rick I woulds say what does Tesco in your area pay for a shelf stacker if you want an idiot pay that.

I’m from in Berkshire round here I think £5-5.50 would be about right at 16-17 I think Lorriane is probably in the right ball park rate. .

    Tim.

I agree with Vivid, quite often the little things can make a hell of a difference.

Some bosses I’ve known, sit in the office nattering to each other when monkey boy
is sweating his prevebial nuts off, or come in offer to help and then don’t bother, opting
instead for the first option. Worse still, they come in, do something for themselves and leave their
ruddy mess for you to tidy up.

I think the key to keeping staff is consideration and mutal respect. If employers don’t want
employees to take the p!ss then the first step is to ensure they don’t do it.
Also listerning to their concerns or suggestions for improvements in the workplace wouldn’t go amiss.

Lorraine, I like the idea of encouraging employee’s to bring in sales by paying comission as it
should also cut down on freelancing.

thanks all for the guideline on wages.

vivid – sorry for taking the wrong end of the stick..

Both myself and my business partner want to be ‘a good and fair boss’ and want to start a hopfully long term employment on the right foot.

    cheers again.

    I disagree to an extent..
First thing.. Im not the fat boss sitting sipping coffee in the background chatting to a mate on the phone.
I’m the boss out digging holes in the rain with the cheeky apprentice that doesn’t know or care how to mix cement.
An apprentice is there to prove himself.. work his way up! Not us to prove we need them or bribe them to work, as it sounds

If you don’t.. Where do you cap this cash flow! Or do you just keep paying more every time they remember to turn up! No chance..

Pay peanuts & get monkeys, maybe! Or do we pay wad fulls of cash and still get the same monkeys?

Save your energy and extra cash for the ones that matter.
Staff is one of the biggest debts you can take on!!!

i suggest you take them on a 3- month trial were they can be dismissed at any point until then. wages negoitable on what they learn in those 3- months

Couldn’t agree more. Paying more money doesn’t mean your employee will work ‘harder’. It might mean they will work ‘smarter’ and it’s down to you to channel that ability into something positive for them and you. Otherwise that smart monkey will be off to build his own little tree in the next street!
