As you may or may not recall I am in the throws of renovating a cast iron crest belonging to the local Customs House on the quay in Weymouth. There are only five of these in the country made from cast so being my usual careful self I broke the mantle 😳 (The flowery bits coming out from behind the helmet, for those of you not into heraldry) in three pieces, fortunately I have a very good friend who happens to be a very good welder and he saved the day!! Next stage is to start the painting and then the Gilding, I will take pictures for you all throughout the process. What you can see here is the crest on completion of the silicon bead blasting and powder coating……………Ummmmm now where did I put the pictures that I took before it was sent away to remind me of the colours!!! :lol1: :lol1:

    Nobby,
I have read that the customs boys (HMCE) are changing their name to the revenue boys (HMRC) in April. Will this affect your commission?

    Hi Andy,

No mate, although the crest is the original customs one, it is actually fixed onto the Portland coastguards operations room. The crest itself is the Royal coat of arms, just to represent the queen I guess.

You are a true master Nobby, I am sure it will look every bit as good as when it was new.

I only have one question tho. Being that these crest and what not have a symbolic association as well as a literal one I assume, what does the Unicorn poking its tongue out represent.? 😮

Is it directed at us in the colonies or was it something else?

    Just curious.
