How hard is it to find timber A boards?

I have tried all my usual suppliers including the 3 that sell the timber variety.
One has no material to make any more
Another has been ringing out for days with a full voice mail
And the third timber co has only chalkies at the moment (NO GOOD)

Does anyone have any suggestions? I don’t normally get to involved in these but its for a business neighbor, try and help 🙄
While I’m at it I need chalk wall boards with timber frames? Another neighbor 🙄 🙄

    Thanks

Steve B. makes his own (think he did some sort of demo on it once)

Haven’t come across a supplier for the timber A boards, everyone seems to be doing the metal & plastic ones, but I was going to employ a local joiner to whizz a few up for me. Is that a viable option for you Lamby?

How do you do that Lorraine? 😉 Thanks for that though, saved me the trouble of making cups of tea for the joiner and a few quid as well 😀

You know more suppliers than the Yellow Pages! 😉 I search for hours sometimes to find a supplier for something, but I never seem to find it. The timber A boards being a good example (although I don’t remember using the word timber, I may have used wood or something similar). Just amazed to how many suppliers you know of I guess 😀

Well Dewi it’s all down to a nifty contact management software called Act.

I have all the suppliers i have come across or used listed in it, each supplier has numerous key words, so i just type in the keywords and up comes a list of all suppliers matching them. In this case A-boards first then Wooden

I also use this program for customers, again if i want to do a mailshot to all the people who have had banners in the past i type in banners as the key word and all my customers come up, i can then mail/email shot them en-mass

    Check the website http://www.act.com/

It was Gray that put me into it. And it intergrates with quite a few accounting packages too

I’ve looked at these and they are no where near as good as the ones I make for myself, for about £70 I can make 2 x 1200mm x 600mm wooden A boards, have a go your self Steve, have a look here http://www.uksignboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=2912

    Thanks for all coming back

I do have a long list of A board suppliers but like Dewi said mostly metal, no real timber ones.

Lorraine. I went to Des first from our database, they’ve run out of material. Not heard of Fastlane, Site looks good but seems to all chalk A boards. Looks good for Chalk boards for the other neihbor. Thanks

Steve. That’s sounds good to me mate, also saw your photo of one you made. Can you PM me with your number?

Danny. Low Cost have been ringing out for days and the voicemail is full. I gave up on them.

    Thanks again all

I get my old man to knock them up.

I lock him in the cellar (you think I`m kidding) till he`s finished.

I get him to make 3 at a time. Material costs approx £70, but they sell from £90+ each.

I was quite supprised to find out how much the materials cost to make them, you tend to just think about the timber, but forget about other things you need, likes screws/glue/paint/varnise/hinges etc.

You could earn a fortune Becky, rent the old man out! 😉 😉

The paints, hinges and everything are quite cheap at a place called Stax. They sell general tools, fixings etc to trade only. I recently got 12x750ml white spirits for 4.99 and my toolkit for signmaking (including a large stock of masking tape) cost only 30. Unfortunately they only have outlets in Manchester and in Bristol, but the range of goods they offer is amazing. I was there today trying to get hold of one of those pump-up spray bottles, but no joy. Saw a very nice variable-heat hotair gun though, £20.
They also sell all the top brands of paint at quite good prices, well under half the price you’d pay at B&Q etc.

    Cheers, Dewi

Steve, when you say £70.00 to make Two ‘A’ boards I take it you’re not including labour, I reckon on about £100.00 to make and paint one board, obviously a little less if you’re making more than one at a time, and with signwriting sell for about £200.00- £260.00 each depending on content. By the way did you ever get that camper van? there’s still one going down the road. Pete

Yes mate I meant without labour but it don’t take that long to do a couple I always keep a couple handy in primer, I usually do a pair on a saturday, the ones you buy are too small and fall over in the lightest wind, no didn’t get the camper the guy selling it was mucking me about so I told him to shove it, whats the one like near you huh? 😀

We make all our own wooden A-boards. We got fed up of trying to find a supplier who did a really decent looking one …….

… and afer reading the info and advice that Steve Broughton posts on here about them, we thought we would give it a go & what do you know they look pretty darn good 😀 ….. so cheers Steve!!

It was a bit daunting to begin with but its the usual case of: the more you do it the easier it becomes.

Yeh, suppose your right they don’t take too long, the first one I made had the board fully rebated into the legs with mortice and tenon joints etc. worked up a much quicker design now.I find people really appreciate it if you put a small handle on the top, or it its a large one a suitcase handle on the side. I will find out about the camper.
