Text from S/Lab to Illustrator
Posted by darrenbrown on 3 April 2007 at 14:28I have been sent a load of text for a Menu board in Signlab format.
As i prefer to edit text in Adobe Illustrator how do I get the text from sign lab to illustrator, so i can set the font and size etc.
Thought I could just copy and paste the text, but it will not let me cdo it this way
Thanks

Hi,
export the file as an ai file then import into Adobe.

- Setting up a menu board in SignLab should be quite easy. Set guides for placement of the menu columns, and then use the on-screen kerning to position the text elements.
- Alternatively, to copy-and-paste the text out of SignLab, double-click the text object to edit, and sweep-select the text to copy via [Ctrl + C]. Then paste into Illustrator.
- However, it would be better to File >> Publish to PDF out of SignLab, and then load the PDF into Illustrator.

Saving to AI converts the text to vector, as do all the other export settings
When text is sweep selected COPY is not selectable from the file menu.
However CRTL + INSERT does copy the text and allows it to be pasted into another program, even when the menu shows it as not selectable.
So even the though both commands are under COPY in the file menu they both seem to do different things !!!!
Their is no option to export / publish as a PDf.

Don’t want to be rude but Rod works for Cadlink who Make Signlab so if he says it can be converted to PDF then it must be able to.
Are they tt fonts or are they signlab fonts? -
I am using version 7 rev1 print / cut.
I was aware that Rod works for Cadlink, I have read many of his postings, all very informative, but their still isn’t a publish to pdf option under the file menu, and it is not an option under the export menu either.
The CRTL + Insert menu solved the problem I was having, although it does seem strange to have two choices one one menu command. The paste menu also has two options as well: CRTL V and SHIFT -INSERT

You haven’t re installed signlab have you I had this once with the V thing due to an install over the top of the current programe

Signlab V7, I’m sure doesn’t have pdf support this was introduced with 7.1. I think text handling is Signlab’s weakest feature and compared with Corel or others which have tabs and proper justification controls it is just plain backward. I hope the next version of Signlab has some serious thought put into the way text is done after all most signs and vehicles have words on them.

I have’nt done a re-install. It was a strange problem though, just assumed ctrl copy would copy the text, but it actually copied the texst box, which is ok as long as you do not want to take the text out of signlab.
I have to agree with you Alan, the text handling is very poor, and considering that is probalbly the most important thing the programa has to manipulate.
Sort out a pizza shop menu in Illustrator with proper text control with tabs etc is quicker than the strange way sign lab handles text.
Still, another day, something learnt and problem overcome.
