Road signs could soon include ‘remove-by dates’ as part of plans to get rid of ‘the blight of pointless signs’, say ministers. A consultation paper has been unveiled, setting out plans to declutter the nation’s highways. A taskforce headed by Tory MP Sir Alan Duncan to ‘tackle the overuse of road signs’ has also been announced.

Research by the Department of Transport in 2013 found that the number of traffic signs has doubled in the last 20 years, to the point that many are now confusing, distracting and dangerous. The proposed measures include ensuring roadwork signs are not in place for longer than necessary by adding a ‘remove-by’ date similar to the sell-by dates on food.

There are also plans to ban adverts and logos from temporary message signs, and to include both imperial and metric measurements on signs indicating weight, height or width restriction limits. The report adds that this lack of understanding has led to bridges being struck by over-height vehicles.

But it stresses there are no plans to change miles and miles per hour on speed and distance signs. Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: ‘Useless traffic signs blight our landscape, waste taxpayers’ cash and can be a dangerous distraction to drivers. ‘We are restoring common sense to Britain’s roads while ensuring drivers have the information they need to get about safely.’

Sir Alan Duncan said: ‘We are going to look at how we might get rid of whole categories of unnecessary signs and improve the look of our roads and streets.’ The taskforce is set to present its recommendations to Government by December.
