Hi Cheryl,
On our SP540 we purchased one of the "wind up" ones from ebay, it was ok but struggled with heavier loads as its only a slip clutch affair.
We then ripped the old motor off and replaced it with something more beefy on a fixed shaft and set it up with some infrared sensors near the floor. The motor only winds when media breaks the path of the beams.
On our RE640 we have a genuine roland take up system, it pains me to say but this is far far better than our home made affair! We set it up with a full roll of PVC banner on the back of the printer, it took a full 30m of 1600mm media without as much as a slip!

I have to agree with the Cheryl. I’ve seen a few aftermarket take ups now and everybody says the same thing about them. They’re much better than having no takeup at all but there really is no substitute for an OEM one. Try scouring eBay for a printer similar to yours with knackered heads or mainboard and buy it for spares is about the best advice I can offer really.

Speak to Nigel at grafityp … We bought 2 off him back in April after a recommendation from Warren. You will not be dissappointed, they are easy to assemble and are much better than the clutch control ones we had previously.
Less than £400 too
Will take a photo tomorrow if I remember
Cheers

I’ve still got my original roland one which was on the grenadier (so a soljet pro II), not sure if it’s compatible with your SP540 Cheryl.
If you’re intererested I’m looking for £250 for it, give me a shout. It is in full working order obviously.Cheers
