Take up feeder thing
Posted by Jon Stephens on 11 May 2006 at 11:29Hi All
I am thinking of buying a take up roller for my Cadet plus, but at £1250 vat I want to make sure its worth it !!
My print room is only 2m wide so when I print a 5m banner, it gets a bit complicated !!
Any one got one with their Roland veracamm/Uniform Cadet ?
Thanks 🙂

I looked at it too Jon, but can’t justify the price. About $au4000 here, and that is a darn lot of money for me to use occasionally. 😉

Sorry. I don’t understand the question.
We’ve got a take-up roll on our Mimaki and I don’t see how we could manage without it.
The alternative is to have a print rolling around on the floor, which is asking for damage, not to mention picking up dust and cr@p before the ink is fully cured.

Does the ink still "gas out" when rolled up ?
I am currently hanging my prints for 24 hours before using them … but this is becoming a bit of a problem with space … rolled up would save me space !
Thanks for all replies !

I manualy roll my long prints John, I don’t do alot, most of my work is 1200 to 1600 long, but the realy long stuff I just manually roll onto a cardboard core.
The Techinks I use are touch dry by the time I have printed about 1000mm, so it is safe to roll it slowly, and then I transfer it to a table to cure overnight. I leave the last metre to go touch dry before I sheet cut.
Never had a problem in the two years I’ve had my machine. I’ll save my $4000 at this point.

We have an auto take up unit on our roland sc540 because alot of our work is over 3m long and like we absolutely couldn’t get by without it. Highly recommended!!

You could look for an old hp printer with one on, they are self contained so you would be able to make some sort of bracket etc to fit it to the Cadet.
I’ve got a Cadet as well as a HP3000, the hp has the take up roller and it’s really handy, there’s a sensor and a mirror at the bottom so that when the material breaks the beam it rolls up a little, you would fit the same thing onto a cadet no problem with a little metalwork.Steve

We’ve made up a manual take up reel. Just two arms with a piece of 1" dowel like a large toilet roll holder with a 4′ cardboard tube on it and we tape the vinyl to the tube and just wind by hand. All it takes is a couple of turns every few minutes before it touches the floor.
I am not sure if you could use a take up system for banners as they take longer to dry and would stick together. -
Thanks everyone 🙂
Banners are usually my biggest problem … do you guys with the take-up system find they stick ?
Thanks

yes.. but makes no odds… put some assistance fans in the front of the machine and problem decreased.
Some printers use very quick drying ink, so that improved. As long as ink doesnt touch ink it is fine.

We don’t have a take-up unit on our VersaCamm. We are currently fabricating a cloth basket though for both sides. There are plans for these on an american printing forum, but last time I posted a link it was edited. We couldn’t justify the extra cost for it, especially after our vendor didn’t recommend it. The VersaCamm does dry a lot quicker with the Eco-Sol max inks though so that’s probably why.
