I did try the Trace feature in CS2 but to no avail.

What signmaking package have you got. Flexi, Easy, Signlab, Corel….

Signlab, but I do all artwork in Illusrator and just use Signlab for the cutting.

Probably as you’re comfortable with Illustrator for designing – Signlab is incredibly capable (as I did above) of converting even rough images to nice vectors very quickly. I honestly took about 1 minute to complete it.
For that image:
Copied & Pasted direct from web. Double click image – posterise to 2 colours (in this instance), trace setup at: Tolerance 9, Corners 6, Speckle 3, Snap H/V OFF, Small Shape OFF.
Then just hit ‘Vectorisation’ and see the results.Picking the numbers can be a bit of a lottery to begin with until you get a ‘feel’ for what will happen.
