Sunstrip help
Posted by Robert Berwick on 18 June 2005 at 20:32Does anyone know if there is a legal size or percantage of the windscreen that a sunstrip can take up?
I have been asked to do a plain white sunstrip and “push it to the legal limit”. But unfortunately I can’t find any info on what that limit might be.
Thanks in advance for any help.

If it covers the swept area of the wipers it will fail an mot, ( on most modern cars this leaves about 1/2 inch at the top of the screen)
or should do. I tell the boy racers this, and also tell them that if they do have a bad accident their insurance could be invalid.

6 cm from the edge of the obscuration band ( black border around screen )
In most cases this is a waste of time as the visor takes the natural curve of the glass and 6 cm down from the band on the left and right edge of the screen means it will only be approx 4 cm in the centre.
Pete’s right, if the car is in a bump and the insurance find out that there is a visor lower than 6 cm they effectively could refuse to pay out.
This does not stop them being sold at car accessory shops etc, I always advise if they are stopped I cannot accept responsibility, dont issue invoice, they have to admit to it being a self fit.

Thanks Peter, I suppose I could have worked the MOT failure out myself.
I’ll let him know before I do it for him.

fortunately a lot of things are against the law. some good some bad. Law is a funny thing, its down to enforcement, the plod may stop you if they have nothing better to do, sunstrips are a bit like number plates, in this respect. Its against the law to ride a bike on the pavement, but is it enforced? The question is if you want to do anything in this country, are you willing to take a risk?

Just to clarify, a sun visor is not the same as a sun strip, sun visors, as integrated into the windscreen as a tint are totally diferent from a total block vinyl.

Regarding the “tint”, if you fit any visor tinted or solid the rules are the same, if it is a tinted visor it should by law allow 45 % of light to transfer through it.

Bob, I was refering to OM windscreens, they can have quite a large “visor” But the manufacturers have their screens C&U certifide before manufacture
