Hello all, I am having a problem setting up my Summa D60 for cutting reflective vinyl. I picked up a 60deg blade and holder that were recommended for the reflective and tried to set the plotter to cut. What happens is the blade seems to want to wander, lines aren’t straight and corners aren’t square.

I’ve tried resetting the knife pressure, blade speed, depth and offset. No luck and the Vinyl seems so brittle, tears easily. I’ve used an old Gerber with their brand reflective years ago and never had this problem.

    I’m using Oracal 5700.

Can anyone shed some light on what I might be doing wrong?

    Thanks in advance, Doug

I have the very same plotter, cut loads of this vinyl with no problems, using a blade thats been in use a while 130 pressure cut no problems, just keep upping the pressure so you get a clean cut with just a slight mark on the backing sheet.

Same here too, I usually run around 125 – 130 pressure and same offset as the normal blade.
I also slow the cut down to 400

Thanks a lot Rich and Steve.

I’m going to try the settings you suggested.

    Hi Doug,

if you’re using a 60° knife in a SummaCut, you will need to change the offset value. On a standard 36° blade, the offset is 0.4 – 0.45 and on a 60° knife the offset value is 0.9 – 1.0.

Changing the offset will fix the rounded corners.

Thanks, I’ll try changing the offset. I had mine set to .45.

speaking to Harry at thingymabobs, you don’t need to use a 60° blade on regular engineering grade type reflectives, the regular blade will do fine, it just needs more pressure.

i cut a number of different reflectives regularly and have a seperate blade & holder for each, some i cut around 120g (new blade) to 140g, others 140 to 160, one even gets cut at 180 if it’s not a new blade in there!

as long as the blade doesn’t protrude too far it won’t go through the paper either. just remember to reset the pressure or switch back the blade before cutting regular vinyl!!!

Thanks Hugh, I now have a used 36deg that I’m trying, It seems to do a lot better than the 60deg. But the Oracal 5700 reflective still likes to tear when weeding.
