Hi can anyone help with this problem I have. This is my first venture into sub. printing and I have a problem with my colours. When printing t-shirts or mugs black comes out more of a dark burgundy, and the same happens when printing Reflex blue(dark blue). Yellow always appears a lot lighter then should be. I am using Xpres inks with a Epson 1290, running on a Mac through Photoshop. I do not use any colour correction software as I cannot find any. Both my mug press and t-shirt press are very good quality press’s.
If anyone can help I would be very grateful, if I have to change any hardware I will.
    Many thanks in advance.

    what Inks?
This is not my arae but I would assume you need to download a suitable printer profile for you ink / printer combination.

I had this problem before while trying to print colours and the problem was photoshop what you see on the screen was not what the printer saw from it I in the end fiddled with the Photoshop outputs on the print screen
Took a bit of fiddling but got there eventually sorry but I can’t remember which setting I used at the time.

The most common answer to your question in the case of black is that your black is not 100% black. Look at the CMYK value for black and you will find that’s where the problem is.

What you see on screen is rarely what you get from print as you print CMYK and your screen is RGB. my advise is to print off a small swatch of colour so you know what they print like

Xpres now do a colour profile for the Epson 1290. I’ve just been sent it from there Technical Team and it has helped solve similar colour problems. 🙂

However I agree it’s trial and error. One thing that you may want to try is to print everything on the Text/Graph setting in properties and I’m sure you already do but also make sure your printing 720dpi.

It could be a cmyk thing, especially if they are supplied files. eg: Reflex blue is a pms spot colour so it may need to be converted to cmyk to print well. Check that your blacks are 100% K, yellow 100%, etc Use the info pallet in photoshop to check the percentages. make sure your images arn’t saved as RGB.

    Hi
Firstly thanks to everyone for the help and advice.
I have tried most of the above and agree most of it is guess work and hit and miss.
It maybe a good idea to put it all on PC, as most profiles for the 1290 are not avalibel for the Mac.
As for Pantone colours, I am a printer by trade and judging by what I am getting at present, I do not think it’s even worth trying to colour match.
The way I see it I should beable to get close enough to say I’m happy, which means the customer will be over the moon.
But I will carry on and try most of the above and then try the same on my PC which I do have a icc profile for.
    Again many thanks.

    Hi Phil,
I have the same set up as you Xpres on a 1290s & don’t really have any problems printing from photoshop without the profiles. What paper are you using for the mugs & T’s

    Hi Phil,
that’s the paper for hard surfaces, mugs etc, not so good on the T’s, what media setting are you printing on, should be inkjet photo quality. I use Epson photo quality inkjet paper for mugs & it’s excellent & dries instantly, with good natural blacks through photoshop & I print at 720 dpi with high speed on. For T’s & mats I use XP 4099 & the results are truly excellent, or so my customers tell me.

I don’t use a profile as I believe the Xpres profile is designed for use with Correll, not photoshop. The Xp4072a won’t give the best resuls on T’s

    Hope that might help?

    Hi Linda
I use the same settings as yourself but use the XP4072A for mugs. Iam going to try the XP4099 paper. and go out today to buy some Epson paper, to hell with the expense, children only need to be fed once a week anyway.
Thanks for the reply I feel now that I am getting somewhere, glad I signed up.
    Phil.
