  • Sublimation fading question…

Posted by Darren Mooney on 3 July 2006 at 23:23

Just wondering if anyone knows if i sublimate a design on to a grained gold plate so be displayed outside will it fade in the sun? If so, is there a way of preventing it/prolonging it? I’m just getting in to sublimationg so I’m a bit green here… also any reccomendations for transfer paper? I was told epson non gloss photo paper, but trying to find a decent quality non glossy photo paper seems to be harder than I thought down the local pc world! cheers

Yes, sublimation on aluminium will fade in sunlight. Life span would be dependent on position, eg. if facing north it will last a lot longer than if facing south. It’s more to do with the coating than the ink, however I believe there is a new coated aluminium with UV protection for several years in the course of developement.
As for paper I have always used Epson Photo Quality Inkjet Paper which should be available in most computer shops.

Thanks Jim, thats what I was told by my supplier, but do you have a problem with glossy paper or do you use a particular weight paper or matte finish, semi-gloss etc… save me some trial and error time! I tried the glossy finish on the, but the glossy finish stuck to the plate! unless I’m using too much pressure or too much heat?!

The paper you need is the Epson matt coated 102gsm in packs of 100.

    A4 – S01061
    A3 – S01068
    Super A3 – S01069
Make sure you print on coated side.

The A4 is available in computer/stationery shops at £9.99 per 100
You may have to order A3 and Super A3 However they can be bought direct from the Epson website.

    Hi

I prefer Truepix Paper (It’s US letter size rather Than A4) – you can get it from most subli suppliers.

I find that compared to the Epson, the colours are richer.

    Cheers
