Stripping a wrap…is there a fluid available?
Posted by David Rogers on 30 June 2009 at 09:20Had somebody on the phone who needs to strip a double decker and is having some issues. (Coming off in tiny pieces – even when warmed up).
He’s apparently seen a Canadian company offering a wrap stripping solution – no other details other than that.
It’s getting a respray – so the old nitromors may be the final solution.
Anybody heard of such a fluid to do it.
And it’s not laminated and it’s ‘thin and horrible’.
Toffee wheel…maybe not…it’s a full wrap double decker.

we have the stuff from the Canada/states that removes it… only works in extreme sunshine. but does work very well… useless in the UK though. trust me i bought in drums of the stuff to strip 100 wrapped trucks and also considered being a distributor. there are also some issues with vehicle type and how it is applied. needs to be followed by the book!
you also have to buy the stuff in minimum quantity and although it isn’t the most expensive product. the freight being a chemical cost us much more than the product itself.I think 3M have a paste that you can apply to vinyl and it bubbles up to be removed but if it was the 3M stuff i used many years ago it left all the adhesive but did make vinyl removal easy.

Thanks Rob
turns out he went down the nitromors route after I’d suggested it.
"I’ve stripped more in an hour than I did all day yesterday…"
Let’s hope he come to me for livery work after my great customer service 😉

I am in the middle of stripping some container units and 44ft artic trailer units we have tried this http://www.vinyloff.co.uk/ but i dont rate it 😕 its ok on some vinyls but not wrap so its down to sore fingers and lots of tears if you come up with anything else in this country let me know please as i still have a few to do 😥

george thats the same stuff mate… we bought ours years ago and still have some left. looks like they now have a uk distributor. same comments apply as above… one thing i would add though… if on a wrap. assuming its laminated. you will need to allow it to be left for around 30 minutes before stripping to allow the liquid to penatrate two layers of vinyl.
as i said though, stripping vehicles in extreme sunshine, coupled by this liquid is the only way to do it to benefit from it.remember to wear gloves also as it tingles your hands. 😀

I have used as directed and it seems to soften it a bit to much though it is better than using nothing wish there was a magic way to get these wraps off as its a ball breaker 👿

heat accelerates the process George. it should mention that on the bottle. that’s why it is probably an excellent product in warm countries but over here we cannot rely on the weather. you also have to ignore the fluid penatration times stipulated to proceed with stripping as i would imagine these are guesstimates warm weather countries…
its a real shame because this stuff is brilliant under the right conditions, sadly not for the uk. at least i dont think so anyway.

Rob could you use heat lamps like the panel beaters use on paint jobs to warm up the vehicles or does it have to be specifically the sun?

we strip a good few trucks covered in reflective vinyl and have to use an MBX army to strip them. Must check out this chemical solution as opposed to the elbow grease solution we have been using.

i think for it to work to its full potential the vehicles full side should be hit be same sort of consistent heat. all i did was parked the truck facing the side in question. sprayed the vinyled area with the fluid. left it 10 minutes. walked up, dog eared a corner of the vinyl and pulled the entire side of a 7.5 ton truck wrapped in a cast vinyl, completely off with no residue what so ever in under 1 minute. turned the truck and did the other sides same…
doing several trucks at once even speeds the whole thing up as your not waiting on penetration time, if you see what i mean. we tried with heat guns and did very little…just for the record it was taking two of our guys up to 5 hours to strip one side using only a heat gun. hense why we bought the stuff in…
sadly, the next day was over cast and the job was back to a few hours per side. in australian weather i recon it would work brill… just strip it outside in sun. -
Wont work at the moment I’m freezing my rear end off lately down here. We’ve got an Australian supplier it seems. I will give it a go don’t have much to loose.
-
just remember direct hot sunshine… when we did one side in hot it came right off. trying the same in the same heat, same day, same time… but in the shaded side of the truck did not work.

KPMF use to have a removal fluid but not sure if they still do it or if it was only suitable for their vinyl/adhesive.

I had to strip two 20ft containers last year, knocks and scratches, britttle and old, was a nightmare. after an hour of cursing i spotted a steam pressure washer in the next unit, a big bugger it was, i cleaned off the whole 2 containers in about 90 mins, all it cost me was a tenner to the guy who owned the steam washer. i was so pleased as I’d already used 500ml of nitromorse doing the first little bit, woulda cost me loads!
i’d agreed to do that job in return for having my car serviced, the customer did grumble on a bit though…"coulda done that myself" etc. I apologised for being so resourceful and happily drove away in my freshly serviced merc!

I had always used steam strippers in the past, the type you use for stripping wallpaper, seemed to work ok for us. You can get them from Argos pretty cheap.
