Stock levels..
Hey all,
As part of my massive overhaul of the way I do my book keeping, accounts, etc, I have just undertaken my first ever stock-take.I know I now have the shop and have ‘filled out’ a bit but I wasn’t expecting to find I had almost £6k in stock items.. rolls of vinyl, garments, cut panels & paper stock mostly. I guess some of it can go down as consumables but it’s all there to be sold in one form or another.
Does £6k seem like a lot of stock for a smallish shop?
I also need to take a better look at my pricing and request a few examples of what you guys mark up materials by, etc. (for eg.) composite

It is amazing how stock mounts up.
As long as you know what is there you can use it and not order more of the same needlessly.
And assuming is not "dead money" that is sitting costing overdraft interest then I see a healthy stock level of regularly used items/materials as a good thing.John

I think the problem with the garments etc (for eg) is that there’s rarely ever the right amount to make up an order involving 5 or more garments – sods law I think it’s called. Say I get an order for 12 hoodies and only 5 are ‘in stock’, I will order the whole lot in and keep the ‘stock’ for those walk-ins that just want one or two, I think the only problem I used to have was ordering an extra £50 worth of stuff to save £10 postage, and ordering a spare to allow for any mistakes – which are rare!

I recently did a stock check for my year end accounts.
The majority by far is vinyl with various pieces of sheet material. I don’t
have the other items like garments for instance.The total came out at around £1200. I am a very small operation though!

I haven’t done a proper stock take for a number of years but usually guestimate out stock for the end of years accounts at about £1500. So I reckon a stock level of £6000 is pretty high but it all depends on what you stock I suppose. We don’t do garments at all so all our stock consists of is mainly vinyl and substrate material.

we normally put down £3,000 for stock, but its probably a little higher. We stock a lot of reflective vinyls and tapes and even a small amount adds up quickly.

I do carry a fair bit of reflective, textile and other vinyls such as laminate etc. as a rough breakdown…
Vinyls £2100
paper stock (24" rolls + A3/4/5 stock) £800
Garments & p[rintable (regular & subli, +mugs, mouse mats etc.) £2000
sheet stock £800bloody hell… far too much garment stock I think!

We’ve only had our printer a couple of weeks and we’re already starting to get rolls of material lurking around the office ! It doesnt add up to much in money terms but it sure takes up space !
