I’m doing a repair job on an acrylic sign that has got a couple of acrylic letters missing. I have noticed that the letters on the sign are not screwed into the acrylic but have been stuck on ( no holes where the missing letters are). Would any type of glue do this or am I best to use something in particular? It’s 3mm thick letters that have no weight in them and plastic locators going onto acrylic panel.

If they are Acrylic letters the best glue to use is Tensol 70.

3M Penloc or Bostick TA431 will also work well.

thanks Ian 😀 It’s just the locators that will be getting stuck on, not the actual letters

Syroflex. Cherwell signs supplies. Used it for over 15 yrs without a problem. Only about a £5. Tensol 70 is just as good but 5x the price!

Will you be taking the sign panel out Marcella?
i am guessing, as a quick fix you wont be. but if you are not, you run the risk of the adhesive running down the sign face before it cures. adhesives like this can be wiped but will already have bitten into the face surface of the acrylic and will leave a Dull patch where it has made contact.

you also have to consider how you will line-up your male and female locator’s.
if you have a paper template for the new letters. how will that give you an accurate for adhesive as its normally a cross hair where you would drill a hole.
also, if the panel has not been removed, you need to consider movement of the female locator’s while it sets. if this is out in anyway the letter wont sit straight.

personally, i would not care how the guy before me did the job. after all, his letters have fallen off as a result of his fixing method.
i would drill the hole with a sharp drill bit slightly smaller than the screw i would use. then slowly screw into the hole with a screw and female locator’s.
I’m being a bit over cautious by saying do it all slow… but you do not know how old the acrylic is and it maybe brittle, i don’t know the position of the hole on the fascia etc so last thing you want, (although i doubt it happening) is for you to crack the sheet.
using the drilling method will take no time at all… using adhesive will be allot longer.

sorry to throw so many negatives in the pot when all you want to know is what adhesive and where to buy. just would rather mention some things to consider before doing the job.

yeah the acrylic cracking was my only concern. I have a new drill bit to use and I think that will be my route after all. As you say, drilling it slowly is going to be the careful option!
    😀
