Stencils for the ground advice required
Thanks for taking the time to read, I have not done these before.
I was asked for a stencil which could be laid on the ground and sprayed/painted through in car parking bays. Now I thought about 5mm foamex which I would jigsaw out the lettering but wondered if 2mm would do which I could cut with a knife also, would any sort of road spray paint destroy it? It looks as tho these only need to be used once so need to be inexpensive. Any advice greatfully appreciated. Thanks in advance, Cheryl -

You’ll be safe enough with 2 or 3mm foam PVC, or even Correx. The solvents aren’t so aggressive so as to melt it – just soften the surface a little.

You could also use 6mm mdf which will lay flatter and be less likely to move or be blown away by the wind.
The flatter the stencil is to the ground, the less over spray you will get going under the letter where you don’t want it. Also consider plenty of stencil space around each character for the same reason.
One other thing about using mdf is if you do need to reuse them, the excess dried on paint will scrape off easier.
For smaller jobs though, I agree with Dave, to use corex cut out with a Stanley knife.
If the can use Chlorinated rubber paint (from BTM/Prismo – Midsommer Norton), that may be more durable than the DIY aerosols that have a short outdoor life.

quick tip – the ground must be bone dry and swept clean 2 or 3 times, otherwise it breaks down very quickly.

I have used aerosol line paint in the past and overspray is a big problem….dont just cover the ground but also yourself….inc poly bags on your feet!!!
