After six months out of the game I have now moved to Spain and I’m ready to set up shop again.
Back in the UK I had a Mimaki JV3, CG130fx and Seal base 54 lam, I was pretty happy with that setup but always felt print quality could be better.

So what I’m looking for now is possibly a 6 colour machine, probably not a Mimaki as I can’t bear to see the waste bottle fill so fast and I may not be that busy initially. Maybe a Roland or one of those new HP machines that seem to be on offer with a Summa cutter for little money.

So please, give me your recommendations and help me spend some money. Duties will be all round signmaking and maybe look to run off some photographic enlargements/art prints.

Also if anyone knows a good supplier in Spain let me know! So far on the internet it looks like it may be cheaper importing from the UK.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I’ve got a SC540 Roland print and cut.

Haven’t seen much that is better in the price range frankly.

Especially the new ones with the new print technology.

Cheers Shane, been speaking to a trade supplier today and it looks like the JV33 is in my ballpark (with a bundled plotter) and that it doesn’t wee through ink like the JV3 used to do.
I’ve also heard good things about the SC540. Must say I am tempted by having a dedicated plotter tho.

All I need now is someone to throw some money at!

    Steve,

As discussed when we met up for tapas recently in Altea, and the phone conversations we had yesterday, you have plenty of people to throw money at here in Spain.

    Hi Steve,
where abouts in spain are you going to be? I can help you with contacts for suppliers. We have found the most important thing when buying in spain is making sure the company has a decent technical department! We have tried lots of different suppliers but roland are the only people who are straight back on the phone or are willing to send someone out! Depending where you are in spain, but there are many differences to the uk, like electrical supply – it can vary enourmously! Surge protection is an absolute must!!

    regards

    Dan

Hi Chris, you would think so wouldn’t you! I have had a few just put the phone down and a few more who haven’t/won’t phone me back.
I’ve been on the phone to the Mimaki distributor in Portugal who has said that they will put me on to their Spanish division, no joy yet though.
I’ve also found a reasonable deal in Germany.
I will persevere though and get back on the phone in the morning to see if I can make some more headway with my pigeon Spanglish.

    Hi Dan,
I’m on the Costa Blanca North, and now you’re swaying me back in the Roland direction. I must say though that I’ve never had a problem with the JV3 we had.
I will get some kind of power conditioning but so far (touch wood) so good with our eleccy supply. It’s three phase and apparently capable of 17Kw.
So shouldn’t have a problem printing and brewing up!

    Ta,
    Ste.

    😮 I can see a name change coming… spanishsignboards.com 😉

seriously though, I’ve just purchased me second sc540. I have a dedicated plotter too though, very handy for a quick cutting job.

As much as I hate Roland the company, they have a good dealer and service crew here. I’m not fussed on the Mimaki dealer locally, so that is what made me go the Roland route in the first place

    Hi Shane,
Perhaps a Spanishsignboards.com would be a good idea. Maybe Rob could get it together.
And judging by the amount of posts, one for all you lot downunder as well.

There´s an equivalent in Spain of UKSB. Not nearly as good, of course, but still very useful. But useless to those whingeing poms who don´t bother to learn the language.

If I were to set up in Oz, I´d make sure I´d learn to speak the strange form of English you all speak down there.
Or would you be obliging enough to do the translating?

    G´day Chris

Us? Strange language? :lol1: I was working at the international airport the other day as a load of european tourists walked past where I was putting up some signs.

I smiled and wished them a happy holiday. You know, the way we do… I said "g’day cobba, ow wuz ya flight? Crickey itsa be-ute day, strooth, too good to be flamin workin" I think one of the guys thought I was on fire coz he scarpered pretty quick.

All I could understand from one of them was ‘scuze me gov, know where I can get a job?’

I made a phone call to a client and got him an interview. Had to tell the client he might need an interpreter though. Best I could make out he was Irish.

Had an electrician come to work today. He emigrated from England 3 years ago. Still reckons we are hard to understand even after all this time. He says the average aussie speaks too fast.

When I was in the states in the 80’s for a seminar, I had some of the delegates looking for an australian interpreter then too. They finished up asking me to speak really slowly, so they could write what I said down. Of course, I bunged it on with the ockerisms, they didn’t know what I was saying in the finish…

Its the Kiwis that talk funny though. We speak proppa inglish compared to that lot down there 😉

Touchy? Me? My wife and kids keep me well grounded Chris!

I’m only really touchy when we play the poms in the cricket mate…. or the kiwis….. or the Indians….. or the ….. I guess you get the drift :lol1:

Hey Splatt, just bear in mind that the JV33 head is not time tested so to speak and that is one big head to replace if it goes down unlike other printers with 4 heads

Well, latest update is that I have been offered the XJ640 for about €13K which sounds pretty cheap to me. I have phoned an old sign buddy who swears by rolands and he seems to think it’s the way forward.
Trouble is, now I need a rootin’ tootin’ cutter and laminator to match up with it for just as reasonable money. The camm1 doesn’t go big enough and the lams I’ve been looking at seem pretty heavy duty.

I’ve been invited up to Madrid for a demo so I could be on a road trip next week.

Exciting yet financially worrying times lie ahead!
