I don’t know if there is a better way of doing it George but the way I do it is to draw the star shape you want……weld it all together if necessary and then create a drop shadow of it, change the colour to white and knock the opacity right up so it holds on any background

I always knock the feathering down to fairly low to keep it fairly crisp
