  • Specific colours for safety signs

Somewhere in the distant past I have seen / read of specific hues (colour reference codes) required to be used for safety signs. These I sem to remember include the green (fire signs), blue (workplace and traffic), red (fire and traffic), yellow (workplace) etc.

If they exist I guess they would probably refer to a Pantone or RAL number. They may be buried in one of the standards (perhaps BS5378) but I don’t have a copy readily to hand. I have asked HSE and they say it’s not part of the regulations or the Act.

I read on other threads that there are references somewhere in some regs regarding traffic signs and the characteristics / standard of vinyls used in reflectives, but what about the precise hues?

Any expert care to shed some light on this please?

    Regards

    Alan

Stocksigns quote BS references in their catalogue here http://www.stocksigns.co.uk/pdfs/2003/04.pdf

I have not checked this any further, but would not have thought it would be the sort of thing anybody would bother to invent.

Edit: I really must change my avatar soon, it’s starting to scare me now.

I was going to ask a similar question to this Alan as I was wondering what colours of Oracal would be used for safety signs and whether there were correct/incorrect colours?

I’m hoping to put together a couple of sample safety signs in the shop, its just when I’ve looked at the colour range available, then at the safety signs themselves, it occured to me that there may be rules, similar to the type of thing Richard has mentioned. 😕

    Cheers, Dewi

The link that Richard posted states that the sign company concerned uses the following colour codes for the safety signs it produces:-

Red – BS code 04E53 which I think is RAL 2002
Green – BS code 14E53 which I think is RAL 6024
    Yellow – BS code 10E55 RAL ?
Blue – BS code 18E53 which I think is about Pantone 300?

Anyone have access to a BS colour chart and a RAL one?

    Cheers

    Alan
