Sound Familiar?
Posted by Jill Marie Welsh on 19 June 2004 at 15:11Robert’s comments on another post reminded me of this:
I saw these on a T-Shirt once.
I can’t take credit for them but wanted to share, in case they are new to you.
And I’ve added a few of my own.
They are comments we hear when “on the job”.*Did you have to go to school to learn that?
*That sure takes a steady hand, doesn’t it?
*How long does it take to learn to paint signs?
*I couldn’t draw a straight line if I had a ruler!
*That sure takes a lot of patience, doesn’t it?
*Do you do that freehand?
*Does it bother you if people watch?
*How much does it cost?
*If you’ll letter my stock car, I’ll let you put your name on it and I’ll even supply the beer!
*I used to know an old sign painter whose hand shook like a leaf until his brush touched the sign!
*Did you do that sign yourself?
*You spelled that wrong…hahaha
*Who lettered your truck?
*That looks crooked.
*Is that a sticker?
*Is that the best price you can give me?love…Jill

My wife is a very talented illustrator and she can’t draw a straight line with a ruler 🙄
The other day I watched try and draw a line by putting her finger in the middle of the ruler and draw along it with a pencil, she drew a near perfect

“If you give me a good discount price on this one I have another 10 that you can have to do”
I always tell them I will do the tenth one free!!!
-
I heard the one about the “glue you spray on the van” today, along with, “Oh, it’s only stickers, is it? What do you do, send away for them?”
I try to avoid answering these types of question; preserve the illusion of it being magical, otherwise they’ll want it cheaper. Just nod quietly and take the money. 🙂

i always hate the ones that when your up ladders fitting a shop front they stand under you saying… whats it gonna be son?
i just shout.. “a sign mrs !” 😉 -
the best one i have come across is!!
customer is standing outside workshop with his van asking it to be lettered by ME!! conversation go from price to what he wants!! fine!!
then he looks at my truck and says!! hey that’s nice ‘did you do that?’ :headbang2:
bet you’ve all had a few of those!! plonkers 🙄

Or you’re signwriting the fascia
Almost completedIt says: Gerry’s Fruit and Ve (cos u haven’t finished yet) and then comes the proverbial:”What’s it gunna be mate?”
The worst one is when you’re working at ground level and who comes along and wants to engage you in conversation and just won’t go away *drink*

I had a guy stood at the bottom of my ladder trying to sell me accident insurance while I stood at the top balancing drills / hammers / screwdrivers etc. Talking with your teeth full of screws isn’t easy at the best of time but I think he got the gist of what I was conveying as he swiftly moved away with what looked suspiciously like a tail between his legs. (strangely enough, a couple of weeks later I smashed my ankle into 7 bits when a scaffolding collapsed – DOH!)

There’s always a smart Alec lurking about whenever I go to put a sign up. 😕
I have found the best way to deal with them is to get lippy with them first…. A good opening shot that alienates most people is the phrase, “You’re not going to be a f*cking nuisance are you?” (delivered in a gruff voice complete with scowl) – this usually deters them from engaging in any further conversation….Best not to say it to the person paying for the sign though 😳

He’s alright Leeroy really, so long as he gets paid on the day

I’m a victim of my own “niceness”…. to compensate I have over the years developed a “grumpy” outer shell but deep down I remain a big soft tart 😀

Nothing can be more intimidating than having to contend with a grumpy Scotsman!
(even if it’s all bark and no bite)
The accent lends itself beautifully to telling gawkers to butt out.
What I wouldn’t give to be able to do that!
Sometimes I sweetly simper “I charge extra if you watch me”.
love…jill 😉 -
Jill – there are lots of grumpy scotsmen avoiding the football at the moment. (soccer to you – Euro 2004?……no Ah well it’s a game we play over here – anyway I expect we will be the grumpy ones come Thursday evening (the English I mean)).
ps – did anybody pay the extra to watch you? 😳

I hope my throat recovers for Thursday
Can hardly speak at the moment after Monday
As Man Utd fan it’ll be interesting to see the lads battling against each other. Of course I want Ronaldo to just have a really bad game for once
:cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

Man U fan living in London – there’s a novelty. I’m a Mancunian Blue, John – don’t get to the games much now as I live in Wales, (they built the new ground at the end of my old street so it would have been pretty handy on match days). I was very glad when last season ended – it’s just not good for my heart. Thursday is going to be tough and I suspect a few more sore throats are in store.

Hi John – an exiled manc – I will let you off then. I remember the 63,000 gates for the derby matches at maine road – I’m showing my age now. First game I ever went to was City V Leicester (league cup first round) we won 4 – 0 and I was hooked, played them 3 days later in the league and won 6 – 0 (I think). Went on to win the league that year thanks to Bell, Lee, Summerbee etc – (now I really am showing my age – I had better go and lie down).
