Just thought I’d share this one, have just done these three Icarus C42 Microlight aircraft, customer wanted to improve their brand awareness and freshen up the look of the aircraft ahead of an air fair this friday-sunday.

Brief was presented to me on Monday, Signage fitted by wednesday, even got my first sunburn of the year! The material used was oracle 551, the Ultralam skin of the planes is much like a re-inforced banner material with a slightly textured surface so special attention had to be paid to the leading and trailing edges, impossible to remove all bubbles – especially on the sunny side, as they warmed in the sun and just kept coming!! They’ll gas out in a few days I’m sure but due to the flexible nature of the material and reinforcing bars within the sections, it was inevitable! once you’ve worked it down properly, the vinyl sticks very well indeed, I can’t see it going anywhere!

The customer is very happy with it and it looks amazing in the early evening sun when they fly over near us!

    Thanks Simon,

I took a roll of clear application tape with me, covered the tail and drew it with a permanent marker pen, brought it back to the shop and applied it to some app covered red vinyl, then using rulers for the straight cuts, and some deft stanley knife work I made the master template set. Subsequent sets were made by using the master template.

I felt that was the quicker option, usually I’d make a template on the pc but due to time and the fairly simple shapes it avoided making templates and working the angles on screen, not hard to do but in the time it would take to do it I’d made the three sets by hand.

As this is a fairly common plane, I’m going to use the original set to make a 3mm foamex template, they’re going to expand the operation further this year so it’ll be worth a few ££ in materials to make a permanent master template set!
