    hey all,

for the past 18 months or so i’ve been selling a product i make from reflective tape, more recently it has generated better interest from a couple of fishing magazines and distributors, so, i need to sort out the packaging.

the product is basically a pre cut strip of reflective material, aprx 25mm wide x 160mm long, when selling to trade it goes into zip seal bags with no labelling, purely because i’ve not yet got around to making the inserts. this isn’t a big prob at the moment as many things in fishing tackle shops are in clear bags!

initially i designed a card insert, printed both sides on a decent thick card, the top of the bag is snipped off the card inserted, folded over the top, stapled and hole punched, takes about 10 secs per bag i guess.

the trouble with the card is the cost, and the messing about, if i have 500 A3 350gsm satin cards printed, it’s about £250 (rough guess from memory), then i have to cut the individual inserts out. thats ok on small quantities, but i’m now getting regular orders of 100+ at a time, and with two magazines both running small features on the product next month, i really need to make it easier to pack, while the card will work out at only around 3p per insert it’ll take alot of time to cut out.

so i was wondering about just sticking a label to the back,

is it possible to print the front facing side first (to show thru the adhesive side), and then the back printed on top, making it just one label required ?

if i’m barking up the wrong tree, i’d be interested in any other possibilities.

    TIA
    Hugh

    Hi Hugh

We don’t do this type of work ourselves, but have used this type of process before.

It’s basically a screen printed clear label with text printed in reverse, then a flat colour and then text on top of that. Sometimes, a ‘silver’ opaque colour is added between flat colours to make sure that the text is not visible from the other side. The printed colours with this process (if text is black) would be black/backing colour/silver/backing colour/black.

As an alternative, could you not just print a piece of paper that is twice the size required and fold this over inside your bag?

    Cheers

    Martin

You cant beat decent packaging Hugh, I bought a euro hole punch to hang my packaged stuff up in the shop and it looks so much better than a bag with a label.
you don’t need 350gsm card to make the backing, most retail items are made from much thinner card than that, dont forget once folded and stapled through the bag it will be 700gsm thick!
Just a regular light card will do and will be a lot cheaper, this way you could have them cut by the printer, I know a printer who does me good deals, if you like send me what you need and Ill get you a quote, I just had 500 postcards full colour 1 sided, with card suppplied by me for 27 quid plus vat, all cut to size by them.

Just thinking out aloud here but why not look at something like a folded business card, this could be stapled over the top and you might find a good deal on printed business cards online.

Just a though, use it, don’t use it 😕

    thanks martin and Steve.

the reason i tend to use a thicker card is because of the memory of the reflective, if i know i’m cutting a load the next day, i’ll lay the reflective flat on the bench overnight, otherwise it all curls up!

how does he need the artwork Steve ? it’ll need to be printed both sides.

the only other option i have is to use a perspex counter top POS thing which has tiered trays about 30mm x 175mm, i think it was for leaflets of some kind, i’ve seen one that would do the job, for about £1.50 each, but it’s only 4 tier, i do 5 colours and white! i looked into getting them made custom, but it’s £50 for the prototype and then about £4 each for 50 😮

lol. this would probably result in better sales, and remove the need for any packing, but i ain’t paying that!!

    HI Warren,

i had considered that, but it looks a bit cheap when done (i’ve printed lots of different ideas onto photo card to try). there’s a fair bit of info on the card hence it’s length, it also helps to hold the tape straight.

    thanks Steve,

the closest thing on that site i can find is for bookmarkers, but at £28 + vat each, it’s cheaper to do the packaging route!
