  • smoothing edges on an image?

    Posted by Grafix-N-Motion on 6 July 2006 at 00:44

I have been working on this for several hours and for the life of me can not figure out an easy way to smooth out the edges of this image so that I can cut it.

I am new to this and any help step by step would be great.

If you can not use the AI file I have the original Corel as well.

had a quick look.. you seem to have multiple layers and you need to tidy up the nodes… delete most on the curves etc…

i have quickly edited this but it is FAR from what you require but maybe better than you have. i don’t remember if i was viewing this with show fill on. so if it comes up as a silhouette just take show fill off.

personally ide re-digitise the wings… the rest needs tweaked

    This is what I received.

I thought it would be OK till I cut it, and then found the wire frame.

I have nothing else to go on.

I see the difference in what you did over what I had. Still trying to figure out how you were able to do it.

Robert when you say you quickly edited it, what did you use?

i noticed you had multiple layers and thick line atributes so "i broke the paths" and deleted some layers. leaving single line layers.

    hope that makes sense?

    i used signlab.

    Yes a little.

I will have to give that a try when I return.

    I am using AI CS2.

Purchased a scanner today and am going to try a different route.

I have spent to much time on this already.

    Hi Scanning wont help..

Your source Corel file was pretty good. the wings was thousands of nodes which can be tidied with an old corel feature which is hidden.

Go Tools > Customisation > Command Bars
    Choose Commands
    Choose Edit from drop down
Find Auto-Reduce and Drag it out onto the Corel screen (click and hold left mouse)

The auto-reduce when used with the shape pointer will help reduce multiple nodes.

It really shouldnt take to long to draw the wings from scratch.
I would think andrew (vectorwise) would sort it for a small fee.
As for cutting the image, there is no reason why you cant cut it from what you have.

When I cut what I have the edges come out all jaged.

This is now I learned of all the nodes being there.

How can I get in touch with Andrew?

There is a link an the left of the screen
But you may be able to simplify the drawing if you convert to a high res bmp, mono tone and then trace. The file you have posted is also Thick lines (in signlab) so you could also try to remove the thick line an reduce to hairline. then weld the result, after puting a fill colour on the shapes

I like it Robert! You Rock! Were do I send the Money. LOL 🙂

Looks like it will cut good, I think I can smooth out the few little places left.

I also sent it off to several of the other online places and one of them sent me back the exact same thing I sent them.

I will post photo’s once I get it installed on Sunday!
