  • Smoke coming from my machine, advice?

Posted by Nicholas Gormley on 2 November 2009 at 19:36

Hi all, Was cutting vinyl this evening after about 5minutes of the job ending i pressed the sheet cut button. The knife went over to the far side to activate the knife and it just stopped and the machine seemed to freeze. I turned off all the power and the screen said "Service Code 0002". I turned it all of again and disconnected everything and then reconnected and turned it back on and the machine started to smoke from the back. I quickly turned all off and disconnected everything. It has melted a chip on the electric board. Is this a big problem?? Who is the best person to look at this for me?? I live in Northern Ireland and my machine is a Roland – SP540V. Please help.

You didn’t have the long vinyl guides in place by any chance? If so this would have caught the knife as it tried to cut though the vinyl causing it to jam. When the long guides are fitted you should go though the menu to tel the machine these are in place. This disables the cutting action to prevent the possibility of the cutting knife jamming on the longer guides.

is this a new machine mate?

does sound the jam has made the motor continue and TRY and carry on, burning it out. ide have thought the motor would have cut off though rather continue to the point it smokes as printers do have head strikes on the media which is much the same thing ide have thought.

I’d have thought a fast destruct fuse would have blown instead. What Cutter is it?

Your best bet would probably be to contact Rolland but make sure you are sitting down when you phone. Have you got some sort of maintenance contract or warranty on the machine at all?
