  • Simple Easymount laminator upgrade

Posted by David Stevenson on 29 May 2021 at 21:12

We’ve had a Easymount 1600 laminator now for several years and the foot switch has always annoyed me. Try as we may to keep it out of the way there’s been many occasions it’s been stepped on accidently almost crushing your fingers while loading. Apart from that the socket for the foot switch is mounted horizontally on the front of the machine, accidently standing on the cable causes the plug to snap off the machine. After breaking the plug for the umpteenth time I decided to “pimp” our laminator. With the help of a small snack box, a couple of switches , and a plug & socket for a guitar I assembled what I class as an upgraded switch system. Fingers crossed that unlike most lunch boxes filled with switches and wires that come from Ireland this one won’t blow up!!!

Bit tame by your standards Dave, thinking back to the nuclear powered fly swatter you made a while back. Top problem solving mate👍🏻

🤣🤣🤣 Brilliant Kevin. That things still working!!! Blows the wings off anything it touches. I’d love to know how many volts it’s kicking out?

How’s your laser cutter going? Hopefully better than ours 🙁

Yeah a £500 repair bill says you might be right. There seemed to be a fair bit more smoke than normal 🙁

Looks like somebody nipped off for a quick Jimmy? Mines not great either to be honest, making all the right moves but no cutting. exhausted all of my troubleshooting knowledge after 4 hrs, can’t get an engineer out for a week.

Not great but too busy with van livery to sort at the minute. Have you got it back to life again? Was the A team music playing in the background? I pity the fool that says you can’t fix it ( I challenge everyone not to read that line in the voice of BA Baracus)

Yeah got it sorted thankfully. Got everything stripped down and cleaned then started fitting new parts. Wouldn’t cut properly at the start but got speaking to a guy from Opus who video called and talked us through aligning the mirrors again. It’s basically a case of manually reducing the power to 10%, sticking masking tape over the mirrors, moving the head then adjusting the mirror angles until everything lines up. Just need some jobs for it now. The CNC seems to do the majority of the cutting work now.

I actually love how innovative good sign makers are.
I am not saying your solution is perfect, just that we as an industry, often improvise and solve problems. I don’t mean just switches or whatever, but lots of things we have to deal with every day!
As a side note, you can buy electrical junction boxes in various sizes and shapes from the likes of Screwfix, and very cheap!

Do you not like my snack box Robert lol? All joking aside I had bought a component box to fit everything in but when I sat down to assemble it I discovered the side of it was cracked (thanks Royal Mail). One of my kids snack boxes was the closest thing to hand. I’ve ordered a replacement but truth be told it’ll probably sit on a shelf for the next 5 years before I forget what I bought it for and throw it out 🙁

I’d actually intended to drill some holes in the housing of the laminator and retro-fit them but I noticed the original plug for the foot pedal was insulated from the body of the machine whereas the new one a bought had no simple option to do this. Didn’t fancy an electrical fault and the plug ending up live so a separate box it was!!!

Build him a turbo boosted cattle prod mate, he won’t mind skipping lunch. I know I wouldn’t
