    Afternoon Folks,

I have been asked by a customer to take down their sign trays and have them resprayed and apply new graphics. They insist on them being painted/powder coated so wrapping in vinyl isn’t an option.

How do I tell if the trays are wet painted or powder coated, are there any points to look out for which will indicate how they have been done, they are not a standard ral colour so it isn’t dibond colours etc.. Reason I ask is because I believe you cant powder coat onto paint!

Also, where would you get such a thing resprayed, I deal with powder coating but not much with spraying.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

    Aaron.

If you take the trays to a powder coaters, they can sandblast or beadblast the existing paint/power coating off them before powder coating them the colour you require.

If they are not too big it might be less expensive
starting from new. Also a lot of shot blasters wont
have a dedicated blasting set up for aluminium(assuming that’s what they’re made of)so will charge acordingly for a system change over.
And a nice visit to the scrapyard with the originals!! 😉

sound advice chaps, guess I need to weigh up the options and check out the costings. I did think it might be cheaper to start again! Its just they are really nice, well made trays and I wanted to re-use them. We’ll av to see.

Interesting point about the shot blasting, i’ll check it out.

    Cheers Guys.

I would work it out like this, say each sheet 10 x 5 costs approx £100 and you can get the reynobond aulpanel in the correct colour its would cost more than this to paint and transporting the sheet (damage free)

so i think i would make new trays and let the customer know to paint powder coat the old trays would cost as much as to supply new ones

    Cheers Rich,

My only problem is that the colour is non standard so even new trays would need painting anyway?

If the trays are powder coated I can get them redone down the road hence no pricey delivery costs, I’m waiting to find out if they were powder coated in the first place!

Cheers for the pointers, I think with all the hassle I will probably go for new trays if I have no luck.

    Cheers

    Aaron.
