  • Sign pricing – opinions please?

    Hi all.

    I’ve been asked to quote for 3 signs. The customer wants all 3 in green background with cream text. No logos just straight text. I’ve took on board other posts about pricing for this kind of job, but I think my prices are coming out too steep. Let me know what you think.

    2 @ 8’x4′ 1x wall mounted 1x on a frame.
    1 @ 4’x2′ wall mounted.

    The customer said they wanted plastic or what ever I decided on. I thought a 5mm sheet for the size of the signs. What’s the best for this? And where to buy?

    And I need to quote for a frame, I thought of a triangular shaped frame due to the size and stability of the 8×4 sheet. In treated timber I guess off the top of my head about £60 to put together myself. Signs are not to be fitted by me.

    So:

    6mtrs cut vinyl = £72.00
    Board (inc vat/ delivery/markup) =£160.00
    Frame = £60.00
    Total = £292.00

    Am I on the right lines or way out?

    Cheers Mark

    I would use alucolour or dibond for the material so board price is ok, if not a bit high, Vynil seems a bit cheap, frame also if you include labour and materials, Overall price is about right but depends on actual materials you are going to use.

    OOps made a boo boo, I thought the price was for 1off 8 x 4 not all the signs, therfore I think you are underpricing.
    Even using foamex the prices seem very low.

    If I’m out giving customers ‘ball-park’ figures:

    5mm Foamex £5.00 a square foot (includes 2 colours 5/7yr vinyl)
    3mm Di-bond £8.00 a square foot (includes 2 colours 5/7yr vinyl)
    Silver anodised frame – £2.50 per linear foot

    So your 8×4 foam boards – £160.00 +VAT each
    8×4 Dibond – £256.00+VAT
    Frame – £60.00+VAT

    £25.00 per hour fitting + travel @ £1.00 per mile

    an 8×4 PVC board requires hanging strips top & bottom to stop it sagging or blowing out of a frame. Just using screws directly to a surface will have it warping like you wouldn’t believe.

    Of course, a lot depends on your competition but I would be looking at £200 for an 8′ x 4′ x 3mm dibond job. Add your timber frame and your £292 is about right for one sign. 😀

    I originally worked out the board price for 3 full sheets of foamex, I got quoted £25 per sheet plus £25 delivery plus vat, then I added a 40% markup totaling roughly £160. But obviously for dibond I’ll up my price.

    Vinyl = 6 metres @ £12 per metre cut = £72.

    Whats a rough price for dibond per sheet?

    Not sure about the size of the frame legs just yet, I need to go and measure up and asses the area. The customer just needs a round about figure.

    Mark.

    Did you plan on flood coating the foamex? composite board will set you back about £80 a sheet, but you can get it in green, so you would be using less vinyl and labour.
    Not sure what you mean by frame legs?

    No, I want a board that is already coloured.

    By frame legs I mean I don’t know how high the sign is to be. Its free standing, but I don’t know if it needs to stand above a wall or not.

    Mark, free standing is another matter foamex is out of the question at that size, unless mounted on a sheet of 12-20 mm ply with a good framework. Powder coated ali may be the way to go, (ashby) but again depends on where and how the post/uprights will be fitted

    Free standing is similar to a sail so you may be suprised at the forces involved, enter a few figures here and see what i mean.
