I need to make up a sign consisting of a 1500x740mm oval with flat cut letters on fixing posts to hang above a shop door.

I’ve already sourced a supplier for the flat cut letters. But I need to now where to get the oval cut out of Black 5mm sheet material (supply and cut).

Any ideas what type of material to use which is suitable to hold the letters and where to buy?

    Cheers Mark

Mark, I would have thought one of the members on here with a cnc router could do the oval for you, personally I would cut it myself from something like dibond with a jigsaw. You would be surprised just how easy it is to cut shapes with a jigsaw if you have a steady hand.

Just a quick thought is this to be a hanging sign or fixed to the wall? if you are going to hang it you may have a problem with it hanging properly due to the letters adding weight to one side of it.

It’s to be screwed to a sheet of ply. As for jigsaw, I think it would look better if it was done on cnc. The customer doesn’t mind paying the extra for a better job. I need to have the edging black so I thought of foamex, but don’t think it will be strong enough. What do you think?

If its being fixed to a sheet of ply then it doesnt need to be very strong as you can always attach the locators through the foamex into the ply.

I was going to fit it all in the shop then screw it into the ply already fitted.

I wouldn’t use foamex at that size – it’ll warp. Better to use an aluminium or Dibond type of material.

Phill I would agree with you about the warping which was why I suggested dibond in my first post, Mark seemed to want to use foamex though. Black is probably the worst colour for warping as it will absorb more heat than any other colour.

I wouldn’t be happy fitting locators to just a foamex panel Mark, but if you wanted to make it up in your shop and then just fit on site what you could do is make it up in the shop then remove the locators and once the board was fitted onsite refit the locators with longer screws.

We used black foamex for a temporary hoarding, which we expected to be removed long before Summer.

Guess what – the hoarding stayed up all year and boy did it warp and buckle. 😳

I’d consider the effects of the Sun if your using black material, especially if
it is to be laminated to backing ply. 🙂
