  • should i include application tape into the job price?

Posted by Warren Beard on 15 January 2007 at 22:30

    Hi guys

I have been reading all the posts about how to price up jobs which has been very varied but all a very good guide to help me price up jobs.

    The question is:

Every time a price for vinyl is suggested (per meter or size of material used, include labour or charge separate, x price by 5 or 10 etc, etc, etc) nowhere does it say if this price includes application tape or not.

I have made myself an XL spread sheet where I put in size of roll and application tape which gives me an overall price of both per square cm and per linear meter.

Should I include application tape in to the price or should it be covered in my mark-up?

    or

What ever I want to do?

    Thanks

Warren you can’t realistically apply with out app tape so it should be in your initial pricing.

    Hi Lynn

I agree, when people ask how much you charge for vinyl and you says for arguments sake, £10 / linear meter, have you worked out that price including app tape or is it just part of your mark-up? I only ask because through all the other posts people people quote a price for vinyl, labour, travel etc, but don’t mention app tape, so I wanted to know if it is factored in when pricing or is considered a consumable and is basically part of the profit?

I know this all sound a bit anal and make no big difference either way but was curious.

    cheers

It’s a fair and valid question Warren. I think most people (I know I do) forget about application tape when working out materials costs. I think it’s really because the vinyl costs a lot more than the tape so the tape is just a minor part of the overall materials cost. But it really should be accounted for when pricing your work.

However, When people talk about a selling price of a multiple of vinyl cost the price of application tape is assumed to be negligible.

    I agree with Phill.

I rarely, consciously, account for the app tape.

The stuff I buy works out at $1.60 a sq metre, so I am confident my markup will cover the costs.

If your worried, add 5% to the vinyl costs, and that will probably cover your overall costs with the app tape included.

    Hope that helps 😀

I usually add on £0.50/m to the raw vinyl cost – makes like easy.

If you use it – you’re covered, if you don’t – you made a couple of quid.

    Hi Guys

Thanks, that’s what I thought but thought I would ask the question anyway as I knew I would get some good responses.

I calculate the cost price per meter per roll of vinyl and app tape and get an overall cost price of both inclusive. I then add on my mark-up. I made up 2 XL formulas to work out quick prices, 1 works per running meter and the other works on square centimeter area. All I have to do is enter in the length or size and it gives me my sell price. ( I then add travel and labour )

Still yet to see if my prices are accurate and hopefully my first few quotes will tell.

    Thanks guys

Warren a lot depends on what the local competition are charging. If I were you I would phone a couple of local signmakers and ask them for prices for certain signs. That way you will know if your pricing is about right or way off. If you don’t want to do it yourself get a Friend to phone for you.
