    For an example of a serif font take a look at Times New Roman, look at how the edges of the letter are finished, you will see what are called serifs, they are the sticky out parts on what would be the corners of the letter. Its difficult to describe but I cant post a piccy in this forum. Foe an example of a sans serif font take a look at Arial or Helvetica, the edges of the letter finishes without any flourishes, blunt ended. I will try and post a piccy in another forum for you. Usage of serif or sans serif fonts are entirely up to you, although I would use a serif font for say a solicitor or legal signage ( just as an example ) and you can use a sans serif font for most stuff.
