Hi – I’ve got a new hobby, scroll sawing. I purchased a scroll saw off ‘preloved’ for a tenner and can’t keep off it. I print pictures onto vinyl put it on to aluminium composite board (3mm) laminate it and then cut round it with the scroll saw. The garden now has birds cats and lately, chickens. They look great brightening up the garden and the center of attraction for any visitor. I have solved the age old problem of ‘what do we buy so & so for their birthday/Christmas’ etc. A CHICKEN… Some of the roosters are magnificent and shine up in the sunshine (yes we did have some last week, I think) The colours are bright and really do look 3D. So if you are looking for a hobby that you can use your unlimited imagination (and the Google images, of course) cut out wonderful ‘images’ of all sorts of things, buy a scroll saw (around £30 to £50) and get sawing.
I have been a signwriter for 20 plus years but I have never enjoyed making these birds and chickens so much doing anything else. Now where are the pictures of that spitfire I saved?
    Regards Peter

Sounds like you are hooked on this new hobby Peter. I have a scroll saw that I bought many years ago to make flat cut lettering by hand. I never use it any more because I tend to use trade cnc routing services, but I do understand how you can become passionate about making things by hand with your own machinery. It’s much more satisfying to do it yourself. Best of all you can produce your own templates from cut vinyl to cut out these shapes on your scroll saw. Have you experimented with any dimensional signs made this way made up from a number of layers glued together?

How about posting some pictures of the work you have been doing, I’m sure many of us would be interested to see your work.

I like using a scrollsaw as well. I’ve worn out three of them over the years.

Would love to see them too Peter. Why laminate btw?

I have some pictures of the first two chickens I made. I laminate to protect the semi-solvent print on the vinyl. This makes it scratch proof and UV safe. There for 10 years at least. Without laminating 3 years max.
The pictures are over 3mb so how do I post them?
