  • Scratched vehicle after removing vinyl graphics, advice please?

I have just had a customer, with a Ford Ranger pick up. I had to remove existing graphics, and replace with new. Now my problem is, when I removed the chevrons that covered the back, there were quite big scratch mark’s. I know this wasn’t me, because I do not remove graphics with a knife (a hard lesson learnt many years ago). My only explanation would be that the graphics had been originally done to cover these mark’s, and unfortunately the new graphics do not. The client is blaming me for the scratches.
Vehicle checks are paramount before touching it, but how do you cover yourself for this sort of situation? I hate doing vehicles for this very reason. They are more trouble than anything else.

You have no way of knowing before hand if it is scratched underneath – he has no way of knowing either

When I was put in this situation years ago I knew I hadn’t scratched it and told the customer so. Thankfully he never came back and probably was the same with the next poor bugger that fell for his nonsense

I’ve had this many times with vehicles, especially chevrons, usually caused by removal of badges by fitters that know the chevrons will cover it and couldn’t care less about what happens when it needs to be removed.

Just explain to your customer how you remove graphics and that there’s no way you’ve caused the damage.

You know you haven’t done anything wrong so stick to your guns.

Well done on vehicle checks, foolish not to.

We have a small disclaimer when the sign the vehicle in, that we are no responsible for damage during removal. It’s held up well when we genuinely did pull the paint off a rear door.

As Phill says, how can he price they weren’t there before. If you had removed other graphics why aren’t there scratches elsewhere?

Stand firm, they were under the vinyl, and let’s see what his next move is.

    Thanks guys.
I know that vehicles are our bread and butter, but I have always said that the time, effort & hassle versus profit on a vehicle is not worth it. I could earn so much more on the bench, with much less effort. However, with the right customer, the vehicle could lead to greater things. It’s the one offs I hate.
