Sainsbury’s signs cause Cheddar controversy

The illuminated orange lights of Sainsbury’s in Cheddar have already been met with controversy – and they are not even here yet. An application is before Sedgemoor District Council asking permission to place signs around the Budgens site. But the plans have not been welcomed by neighbours or the parish council. Elizabeth Faria, who lives in Roynon Court, said: "I object to all the new, unsightly signs being put up for the recycling centre; there is no need. "I experience a lot of noise from the recycling area. I can hear every bottle drop, even with the windows closed."
Cheddar Parish Council suggested that "all illuminated signs should be turned off outside of store opening hours" as they are close to a bat corridor. Penny Hambly, of Church Street, agreed with the parish council, as her bedroom overlooks where the signs would be. "Our bedroom windows directly look over the car park, across to the supermarket," she said. "I have blackout curtains and blinds in order to minimise light from there and promote good sleep. " "I genuinely see no need for large illuminated signage [but] I would have no objection if signs were to be turned off out of opening hours."
