Safety Signs for Beginners
Posted by Bill Dewison on 5 February 2004 at 21:16This is one of those questions I’ve been avoiding to ask π I feel like a newbie once more π
Is there a standard colour pallette for safety signs? And if there is, does anyone know the corresponding Oracal 751 colour to match this?
I’m throwing together samples for the shop this weekend and I figured safety signs are a good one to start with as there is little design and maximum application. Practise makes perfect π

Ill look out some names i have, maybe others will give you them before then.
There is a few safety sign catalogues on the go, totally free!
They give you a great selection and also inspiration for some of your own.
The colours are normally stated in them for guidance. The best thing if its just general safety signs, is to use the vinyl closest to the ones in the pictures provided in the catalogues. (I know thatβs not very professional advice) but the fact is, thatβs what most companies do. Obviously different if your doing a large department stores & buildings & the like, then you have to stick to chart colours/shades etc.
im sure there will be a health and safety sign website, giving exact codes etc if you really need them. π

I wouldn’t worry too much about getting an exact match Dewi, I have been making them for years without having an exact colour they are supposed to be π no ones complained yet !
The red and yellow are pretty obvious anyway, the green and blue are pretty much as you will see them displayed on the web pages of any safety sign specialists.
Sorry, I can’t give you references as Oracal is the only vinyl swatch I havn’t got one of ! can give you them as anything else you like from BS, RAL to PMS or different vinyl range ?That wasn’t much help really was it ??

Do a search Dewi as this has been talked about in the past I am sure.
As for oracle colours I was told that the best matches in 751 were: 021 yellow, 068 grass green, 032 light red and 052 azure blue.
Hope this helps, they are the colours I currently use and havent had any complaints yet. -
Nice one gents π I was considering the near-match method, it seemed a good way to do it. Just thought its better to ask the profs. what they use and go from there. Thank you for the Oracal colour refs Martin, much appreciated π
I’ll post some the results of my sign making marathon over the next week, if nothing else, it should give everyone a good laugh π And yep, I’m going to include the mistakes, seems only fair π
I still marvel at this site everyday and I’ve been here over 2 months now. Everyone here is always willing to lend a hand, educate the newbie and give good sound, practical advice. I’ll have a mighty big round of drinks to buy at Sign UK π

Hi Dewi
One big H&S sign supplier quotes the BS colour codes that they use. If you check back through earlier threads I asked a similar question 3 weeks back!
At that time I did ask HSE whether there was any regulated colours but they didn’t know! They advised that there is a British Standard dealing with safety signs, but they didnt have a copy of it and didnt know what was in it!
I asked the British Standard people and they said to look up the standard in a reference library or buy a copy of the standard. The chap I spoked to didnt have the ability (or inclination) to look up the relevant standard and say whether there were any specific colours referred to.
I then spoke to a mate of mine in the H&S business and he found that most suppliers of H&S signs do as others have said, match as near as we can to the safety sign catalogues.
Regards
Alan
