Safety Signs
Posted by AaSk4Stickers on 19 September 2003 at 15:45I heard from somebody yesterday that there is a licensing system for health and safety sign makers.
As a fairly recent newcomer to signmaking, I havent heard of this. I know that there is an health and safety sign association, and that there is a licensing system with the DVLA for licence plate manufacture, but I haven’t heard of a H&S sign licence requirement.
Anyone help with more info?
Also, does anyone know where one can get photo-luminescent vinyls?
Gawd, is that the time! Have fun team.

Europoint display sell a photoluminescent material for safety signs. This is the background (substrate) material (so you don’t cut it with a plotter), you simply letter it with ordinary vinyl (e.g green).
I’ve never been aware of the need to be licensed as a safety sign maker. We do quite a few safety signs so I am interested to hear more 😀

As I am also new to the trade I would be interested in finding out if there is a register for health & safety signs, we don’t do that many of them but would like to do more as it seems to be fairly easy money.
As for photoluminecent vinyl, hexis sell one. -
Hi Mike and Martin
I have just rung Europoint – the vinyl is out of stock at moment, due in in 7 to 10 days. I am told the cost will be around £20.00 a metre for 500mm width
👿
That makes such signs damned expensive!Following Martin’s comment I have also contacted Hexis – they charge £5.45 per metre 610mm wide – now how’s that for a variance!
(:)
I am getting details ex both
😆 -
With A UKSG membership you’ll get quite a saving on Europoints listed price but it still doesn’t beat hexis – are you sure its the same stuff, seems a hell of difference in prices to me

Hi All
You don’t need a license for sign work
You do need a llcense for number plates
Vinyl contact – Vinyl Logistics – Jane or Carol – 01636 613222
She maybe can sort out for you.

The plot thickens!!
😎
There are, it seems, several different grades of the stuff.
🙄
I have a traveller coming to see me tomorrow with some guff on it, I’ll post a message when I have seen what is on offer.

Be careful with photolum vinyl, the cheap stuff shrinks like crazy, I use shed loads of the stuff here in 760mm wide that I print on through the Maxx, that is used on most of the ships here in North Ireland, the material is KPMF and it is excellent, another brand is 3M, which I used to use but as you can guess by the name VERY VERY VERY expensive, £21 1000mm x 380mm.

Had a most interesting chat to the local man from Hexis.
It seems the person who quoted me the price of £5.45 yesterday was way off beam.
Hexis’ standard price is £15.97 per metre for the 610mm wide material. Sample looks OK and the tech specs look OK also. Thanks for the words of wisdom Andrew, I probably asked a lot more questions of the rep than I would otherwise have done.
Hexis’ price is a lot less than Europoint’s £20.00 odd. Thanks Martin for the lead.

I use a great deal of photoluminescent vinyl and have used various companys to supply it, most of the them ship it in from Germany( i think )
I do think there is an issue with photoluminescent signs having to meet British Standards specifications and I could be wrong but think most of the companys mentioned above are unable to supply that. I use a British company called Kemco Technology (www.kemcotech.com), they sell a product, Class A , under the PSPA Classifications. Price depends on how much you buy. At the end of the day I sent for samples from all these suppliers and stuck my head in a cupboard with them the diference in luminosity between the various brands was amazing. I must say that both allprint and hexis supply a product sprocketed for the Gerber edge. I think there is alot of specifications that we as sign makers should be aware of and sticking to, its a shame there is no central source for this information, or is there?
