Am I missing somefink? Is it not just routed out of 20mm PVC or Foamex?
-
thanks Peter. Its what ive thought from the start peter but thought i was going off my head (hot) 😀 . I wondered how there was so many companys i had contacted but very few offered to rout out any thing other than MDF.

It’s 20mm Foamex, v carved,
very common around here
We do it all the time

hmmmm the gold is very vibrant harry although it doesnt show in the picture. Perhaps as you say it could be 20mm dark green foamx with the lettering being painted in with one shot gold or even guilded. Id rather walk away from this one if its Foamx or MDF i wouldnt use any of them for exterior work

ian how is the letttering done is it guilded which i could do but it would be expensive or one shot

I wouldn’t use MDF either Brian But Foamex properly keyed and painted would be fine.
I’ve seen pieces Ian has done and they are brilliant, as he says, its very common here., routs beautifully. -

It’s 20mm white foamex spayed green with guilded or infilled gold lettering, It’s not complicated

ok people you are educating me here .Question ….this is buy the roadside, a very busy road how would you secure this ? I notice that the hotel in the picture has secured the foamx from the side. how is this done? the bolts wouldnt be drilled into the foamx surely. Its going to be double side so would it be better to have the poles running up the inside of the boards

Would like to know myself Brian for a wee job coming up. Looks like a neat solution. I wonder is it something like this?

-
I’m confused. Why is everyone against MDF? It lasts years if treated properly. I would stick pins in my eyes before I used foamex for a sign like that one.
-
Just a personal dislike with me Andy, hate working the stuff…dust seems to react badly with me.

hmmm intresting harry where did you see that? just spoke to ian on phone seems to be the answer to my problem 😀

mdf /Foamx but which is best fIGHT FIGHT!!!!!! 😀 😀 sorry a bit of harry hill coming in i never miss him hes great

took that of an American website Brian, I’m sure Screwfix would do similar.

Tradesignz use 19mm foamex for their swing panels with eye hole bolts threaded in the top to swing from, if it can be used for that I’m sure would work great for that application and if I was doing a job like that I would actually feel more comfortable using Foamex over MDF.

Yes but a swing sign isn’t going to have any problems with expansion. If you restrict the expansion by bolting it in between two posts then there is a chance distortion will occur, especially with a dark coloured background.
Harry, yes it is a nasty substance. I wouldn’t blame anyone for avoiding it for that reason.

Anyway, if you struggle to find anyone who will rout it in whatever material you want, you could try Advent Plastics in Wellingborough. 01933 224716
