Roller-up Banner Stands advice please?
Posted by Ciaran Rigney on 4 July 2009 at 21:20Hi Everyone
Im hoping to get into display aswell as general signage.
I have a query about what most people call roll ups?
you know thw banner that rolls up out of a steel container and held by a steel spine. How are these sold by the supplier?
Does banner material come with them or do you have to print the banner and fit it to the container? Thanks
Ciaran

9/10 will come as the cartridge ready to install the printed media.
some, very few though, trade suppliers now supply ready printed stands.
my gripe in giving trade suppliers like this, this line of work is that they can poach your customers directly after a single job and in the long run lower the going rate on prints from the sign trade. Although not experienced by myself, There appears to be a bit of history that B&P did this during slow business periods of their trade brigade printing devision. i have heard of several others now pushing directly to the trade via the internet… my view is… Dont line their pockets today to allow them to undercut you tomorrow! -

I suppose the only way i could justify this would be that if a trade supplier did this to me they would instantly loose my custom and any further work.
Usually does the customer supply you with artwork for tis print?
iv seen some sign companies offering the complete printed and designed package at very low prices…..how can one justify , the cartridge, banner , print and artwork design for such a low margin i wonder? -
you will pay an average of £20 per cart which includes the shoulder bag.
you will pay ex-amount from your source for Media… which should really only be a few pounds.
you have artwork/sizing charge should it need it… (charge extra for it)
print, trim and finish the print and load in the cassette. bottom is normally taped and top snap fixed to rail or taped.
hand over to customer with hand out.
but do yourself a favour and don’t fall below £150+vat for supply only with very minimal design/sizing involved.yes there are many VERY cheap sources out there doing this line of work.
they will consist of folk that undervalue our trade or are desperate to run their their machines. if not, they are more than likely the high volume supposedly trade printers that many of us lot line their pockets.quote :I suppose the only way i could justify this would be that if a trade supplier did this to me they would instantly loose my custom and any further work.and lets say, (for instance) they quoted you on 50 vehicle truck wraps you could not produce due to time, costing or lack of machinery?
now you don’t win the contract/quote and move on… only to learn that the same trade supplier you asked to quote on the artwork supplied to your customer had went directly to "your customer" and gave them the trade direct price? how would you feel? take my word on this… and as i said, not from my personal experience but i have heard ,any instances of this happenening and hearing more by the day as more and more trade printers, trade printer suppliers start using websites under different names, sell drectly to our own customers. -

Dont worry i wont be low balling a project….. for me these types of jobs will be pretty irregular so i will want to make a bit of money on them.
It sure is a hassle when one is starting out, to have their trade supplier competing for the same customer? shocking really, but i suppose there is nothing we can do but as you said, do our best refrain from giving out our client details.
Thanks for the help anyways Rob 😀

the cassettes are cheap but the correct material is not if you decide to do some go for quality not price.

Thanks Chris,
In regards of the artwork, As i was saying to Rob, i’v only ever dabbled in general sign installation.
So what can one use to make the artwork?
Would adobe photoshop do?
And how can i by using adobe photoshop, print out to the size of the required banner? is there a size inputting tool on adobe? Also what file type/format would be reqd for this type of print….
Again excuse my ignorance, i just have no experience whatsover with display signage and printing.
