  • Roland versacamm service and still have printing problems

Posted by Danny Miller on 8 January 2014 at 22:37

Hi guys just had my roland versacamm sp300i serviced today and still having the same problems, the tech changed the wipers, caps ect and it was given a manuel clean but i’m still getting blurry prints, with little hard bits of ink on media, the engineer put the problem down to dust and static on the roll of media , i have now opened a box of brand new media and i’m having the same problem, i have tried loads of different profiles with no difference , the only time i can get a half decent print is when i use some old gloss photo paper and use the glossy paper profile, is there anything i can use to get rid of the static ? its driving me mad , spend over £500 this week and still can’t get a good print, any advice welcome

    Many thanks
    Danny

I have to agree it looks like the vinyl is contaminated. Perhaps you have a bad batch of vinyl or it’s being contaminated by handling. DO you have an alternative brand you could try?

I find when handling rolls of vinyl, the first foot or so of print is usually contaminated by handling. Rather than waste this vinyl every time, I use a clean cloth and Isopropyl alcohol to clean down the exposed vinyl before printing.

Hi guys i have two different vinyls so find it hard to believe its the dust and static problem, i have even cut off a metre off the roll which made no difference , but i have had a little better results when printing in high quality and turning down the heat which fixs the first picture but not second , will i use loads more ink by allways printing in high quality ? , also i have noticed the times when i have the hard ink is when i use some of the roland spot colours in adobe illustrator

    Hi Danny,

Can you post a photo of the head test print ?
Just to check the state they are in.

I have an sp540 and my head test print isn’t good. I get lines a little like that on your 2nd picture.
I plan to have the heads changed this month, however as I need to get work out before they are done I use the high glossy white photo paper profile in high quality.

It takes a hell of a lot more time to print but the result is great.
As for your first picture I had same sort of result that was solved with a little more heat.

As said, 100% it’s dust contamination. You can even see the ink pooling round the bits of fluff!
Always going to be worse on areas of heavy ink coverage.

Avoid storing rolls direct on floor, lose the first foot or so or do as Phil, wipe it off.

Also check preheat and drying temps are high enough and maybe increase passes to limit pooling by giving it a chance to dry a little more.

Danny have you tried cleaning the clamp bar – Media could be picking up dust from under there. ve been caught out by that one in the past.
