Hi, What are peoples opinions on buying a new machine. I want to upgrade my roland printer from a 1370 SP to a 1600 wide printer. I was settled on getting the versa art but my supplier has just offered me a SJ645ex demo model (hardly used – still 5 yr waranty with full set inks etc) for $25k. A great deal on my part I think but never researched the soljet as it was a little more pricy.

    Thanks in advance

Do you need a 6 color as opposed to a 4 colour?

What is your main line of work?

Hi Jason, I mainly do safety signs, labels/stickers, vehicle graphics, etc. 4 colour always worked perfect for me. I am a bit cagey with it being a 6 colour as I used to have a mimake jv3 and found it a waste having the extra 2 colours.

You can run the 6 colour machine in 4 color mode and get even more speed out of it.

What volume of work will you be doing?

The VersaArt has RIPC. I haven’t seen the older soljets to see the quality in faster speeds. If its a demo unit grab a few files and get them printed in the comparable quality modes to see the speed versus quality on both machines then make up your mind from there.

What is RIPC? I would not be comfortable running a 6 colour in 4colour mode all the time. Volume wise is approx 20m per day. How old is this model of machine do you know?

Why wouldn’t you be comfortable? They simply remove the Light Cyan and Light Magenta and I think just put in a Cyan and Magenta.

20m a day you could easily run on the VersaArt.

RIPC is Roland Intelligent Pass Control.

It adds an extra pass to hide the affects of banding. Mostly used in high speed modes where the number of passes is reduced.

Not sure how old the Pro II Series are. I’ve been in business about two years and all I can remember is the Pro III Series.
