Hi everyone, hope someone can help or point me in the right direction here…

I have a trusty Roland pnc-1100 which has been cutting fine for some time. Recently however the blade would sometimes stick down cutting the vinyl where it shouldnt so I opened up the head to give it a clean and mini service. When doing this I noticed the RED and BLACK magnet wires in the pic below had rubbed and abraded their coatings exposing the wires a bit. Now though, the magnet (which moves the blade) is not working at all so i think I have touch the wires together by accident shorting something. I guess either the magnet is shorted or the circuit board the wires connect to is shorted somewhere. My question is does anyone know where I can replace these parts from or who I can take it too for some TLC/servicing??

Ive tried powering the magnet from an external battery (1.5v) but it didnt move the blade at all. Ive also ran a voltmeter across the connectors where the magnet should be connected on the board and pressed the ‘up/down’ blade switch and it only records a tiny voltage of 0.02v when switched (this seems a little low).

Does anyone have any experience of fixing these/replacing parts or should I just give her up?

    Andy

The part you are calling a magnet is a Solenoid. When energised it creates an electro magnet which is what sends the knife holder down.

If you disconnect the Black / Red cable from PCB and place a meter on the connector testing the solenoid you should be able to get a resistance reading in Ohm’s If you can’t it’s the solenoid. If you can it looks like it’s more likely the PCB side of the system.

i have had a few of these issues and very often it is the 8 legged fuse on the mainboard that blows. they can be replaced if the part can be sourced.

speak to ceri at cammtec, he has infinate experience with these older cutters.

Ok heres an update. Ive had a look today and I think I know what caused the initial problem. I put a spot of cyanoacrylate glue on the wires to hold them in place and it appears this glue reacted with the wire rubber where it joins the magnet/solenoid and has perished it causing the actual wires to short. Ive taken the magnet/solenoid apart and separated the wires and it now works (ie it moves the blade) when I place a test charge across it but still doesnt work when plugged in to the carriageboard (obv it will still need replacing tho now Ive all but destroyed it!!) so Im guessing something has burnt out on one of the PCBs.
I havent had a look at the mainboard yet (I guess this is located behind the LCD display right??) but Ill be doing so later.

I tried Roland today but they were closed after 4pm, do they sell parts for these machines?

Mark – Ill try Ceri @ Cammtec in the morning, thanks 🙂

Anymore info, write away folks! Thanks!
