    Got sent this email today,

Subject: Attention Roland COLORIP Users – Wasatch Colorip Upgrade

    Dear Roland COLORIP User,

Roland COLORIP was produced by Wasatch for Roland DGA back in 2003.
Although it was a fine product in it’s day, it hasn’t seen
an update in nearly four years. Users will feel the pinch
of compatibility issues with current software and workflows.

We’re pleased to offer the solution – the Wasatch COLORIP Upgrade.
For the extraordinary price of only $299, this upgrade brings the full power of Version 6.3 of Wasatch SoftRIP to your Roland PRO II device.

    – Includes all Wasatch SoftRIP features introduced since 2003,
including 16-bit color, direct to layout workflows, and pre-RIP nesting.
    – Supports the latest file formats including Adobe CS3 file types.
    – Works with Microsoft Windows XP and Vista
    – Fully compatible with future upgrades to Wasatch SoftRIP
    – Compatible only with printers previously supported by Roland COLORIP

yes shane its a good offer but will only drive the original machine you bought and had colour rip for.
i have not taken it up yet because its dongle protected so will only work from one PC. which is not how i work.
so when i get the pdf file or go vista problem i will have to get it.

I understand the new software is a full version Chris… not an upgraded version of the limited colorip.

it states "Print directly and manage queues from networked Mac or PC" which to me says you can use any machine on the network?

I have a dedicated PC for my printing so it does not affect me in that sense.

It must do as ColorRIP are running some of the big named flatbeds at Fespa, they would use something that isn’t network compatible.

as i was told by a wasatch dealer.
its not the full ver it will only drive the network roland printer you bought that came with roland ver colour rip.

if you want to drive a different printer you buy the full ver £2500 ish.
the upgrade has all the bells but for that one roland printer only.
and will only work from one pc.

if it was the full ver i would have bought instantly.

prove me wrong please so i can justify buying it

I think you are right Chris, it only works on your original machine, although it is a full version in all the features.

I’ve put my name down for one, when I get it (if they ever answer my email) I’ll tell you for sure.

Just to clear up any confusion regarding the ColoRIP update offer from Wasatch.

The update is from Roland ColoRIP to a full featured release of SoftRIP (currently 6.3) and not a "light" version. The only restriction on the update version is that it will only drive the same printers as your original ColoRIP software – hence the very low cost. You can drive multiple devices across your network and manage your printers remotely from any PC or MAC with a browser with the updated version. If you then wish to update further to support newer printers, you only need to pay a further upgrade fee to the version which would support your newer printer. For this fee, you get a new code for your dongle which will activate the other drivers.

As a guide, the update is available in the UK for £195.00 ex-VAT. By the way Chris, you don’t have to uninstall ColoRIP to use the update. You can still run either version on your PC and ColoRIP on all other PC’s to give you flexibility.

As a final note. All the profiles you currently use in ColoRIP will work in the new version but they are 8bit profiles and so you will only get the same quality you get now. Make sure you get hold of the newer 16bit profiles to see the full benefit of the update.
