    Hi,

I’m new to the forum here, but I need advice on applying a pink strip along the top of the rear door as my design below:
I have the logo & letters already prepared but not the strip.

As you may notice there is a double curve where the pink would be & I need to know whether:
    A) Are there any tips on how to apply this without creasing?
    B) If I buy a stock .ai vehicle outline drawing of this car, would the dimensions be correct for cutting without measuring? (The base of the vinyl is curved)

The rest of the vehicle I have completed from measurements alone.

    Many Thanks

    Rick

    Hi Rick

I would do the stripe as a parallel piece rather than trying to replicate the exact shape of the car,
start in the middle by creating a hinge, and removing half the backing paper. I would not use app tape.
Holding the far edge of the vinyl in tension, squeegee in a "chopping motion" from the centre and at the same time guiding the vinyl to the top edge of the bodywork. with the hand that is holding the edge, it would be easier with help from a second person if you are not experienced.
then repeat with the other side.
Outlines are not accurate enough to to replicate a 3d shape. but if you really needed to have the curve then you would need to measure the car and transfer to your prog,
Alternative and quicker would be to trim the vinyl on the car, using an oversize piece of vinyl to follow the bottom curve and then trim away the excess from the top edge. using the glass to run your scalpel along

    Thanks Peter

    A bit nervous about this..(remember I’m new to vinyl application – I am a designer! 😀 )

I know what you’re saying, but to scalpel along the bottom edge is to me a bit risky, one wrong step/kneel/sneeze etc. & hey, it’s a new piece! (after piece, after piece!!)

Someone told me that there is a flexible "straight edge" available. Does anyone have any info on this?

    Cheers

correct- against the glass edge is fine.

peter remember he is new to fitting.

as a designer you now have to think about fitting as well. (sorry had to get that one in)

    helping tips.
you have already drawn the shape, size it and cut it, it will cost you £2 to find out how close you are, but you will now have the info to alter the shape.

3 layers of vinyl is getting a bit thick try to stick to 2

    and welcome

No, I haven’t drawn the shape yet – that’s my problem!

I need an exact template for a cutting file!

I did nor suggest you cut the shape on the car paintwork, although this can be done with care and a some masking tape.
The idea is to use the straight edge of the vinyl to follow the swage line on the car,
You could also make a template by using some application tape, clear is best and cutting by hand on the bench.
