Removing Vinyl Glue
Posted by Mark Pack on 27 June 2006 at 21:02Hi all, long time since I’ve posted and I’m in need of help.
I’ve just 99% finished a job. I flood coated a shop window with etch glass vinyl. But I had to lay it in 2 pieces and I over lapped the layers and planned on trimming the overlap off. But after clearing my tools away I forgot all about it. I had to go back the next day anyway to finish a couple of bits, but when I came to remove excess vinyl (my god it was a bugger) it has left a trace of glue, and the customer ain’t happy, even though it’s not on the side that the public see. But he can see it. I was wondering what I could use without damaging the vinyl at all.
Any advice?Cheers Mark
P.s. posting some picks of jobs that I’ve done on the UKSB Members Portfolio if your interested. Including this job which is an Indian takeaway.

Mark as the vinyl is now in place and therefore you cant upset the adhesive side against the glass what about good ole meths or something
John
would do an inconspicuous test area first tho

I’ve tried a diluted mix of meths. What I use for wet app, spray bottle of water, 5ml meths, couple drops of baby shampoo, but hasn’t moved it at all.

Straight meths on some paper roll. Rub it off – it shouldn’t do anything to the other vinyl. Vinyl is pretty resiliant stuff. Just don’t use ‘adhesive remover’!!
I have done this a few times with no adverse effects.

White spirit is fine. I tend not to put meths on etch because it sometimes leaves that powdery film behind that just moves about when you try to clean it off. Whatever you use, rinse it away with some water/app fluid afterwards to neutralise it.

glue and tar remover, dab on with a cloth, leave for 30 secs and wipe off.
why did you want to trim the overlap anyway? By doing so are you not risking cutting through the "underlap" hence risking a line when the vinyl shrinks?

Yeh, forgot to say – wipe it off with soapy water 😳
ps. Andy, I’ve never had that white powdery stuff. Either we’re using different meths…or different vinyls. Go figure.

I tried to explain that to the customer but he’s set in his ways. He wants a professional job without paying for it. He stood over me for every second I was working I was nearly tripping over him. In the end I let him have his own way. I just wanted to finish the job and get out of there.

Next time you get a client like that make it clear you are prepared to walk away from the job. I’ve seen the picture of this job you posted in the forums and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the service you have provided. The bottom line is they are looking for a discount. Don’t take any nonsense from them!!

Just been looking at the indian job.
I’m totally guessing here based on more feel for size than anything, (sorry if I’m wrong 😕 ) but is the height of the etch a little under 1220mm?
Hindsight possibly, but as it is a fairly simple sweeping curve maybe hand cutting the curves in a 1220 roll may have given you the ‘zero joins’ option.ps. the ‘join’ is barely noticeable anyway!

I thought about cutting it free hand, but, 1) that day I didn’t have a steady hand, and 2) I already had a few metres of 610 left over.
Your right about wanting to barter with the prices, but as far as I’m concerned I am that p*&í of I could rip the whole thing down and tell him to shove his job, but like they say, its word of mouth and all I need is one bad word.

nice flag………peter 😉 got bugger all to do with glue………….. 😉

I’ve done that before. 😀

Ive just spent a while removing some vinyl and also the glue a guy had used to stick a notice onto a sign with. I used Jizer, spray on, be patient and rub gently with a cloth or paper towel. The glue I removed was on a sign that was flood coated with brown vinyl. The brown was unaffected and un scratched, but I couldnt say wether window etch would be unaffected, you would have to test a patch first.
Oh and I wiped the Jizer away with rapid tac and rapid prep before I applied the new letters.
Personally if I was to put window etch on anywhere I would avoid a join if at all possible as it will stand out a mile if its not perfect…….sorry just my opinion. -
Thanks all, the white spirits worked a treat. Customers finally happy and coughed up payment without any fuss.
Cheers Mark
