  • Removing traditional brush paint – advice needed, please?

    Hi all,
I have a customer who’s come in and asked how to remove traditional brushed paint from an old tractor he’s bought, I suggested meths but said I’d ask here for more expert opinion!

    Thanks,
    Hugh

I suppose it depends on how good a coat and how many it has had. Also what paint was used, but generally the only really successful way would be to rub it down and repaint the panel/s. Meths won’t make a dent on it in my experience. If the underlying paint is baked then believe it or not I’ve managed to use nitromors paint stripper on it and then sand with 1500 wet/dry and finish with cutting paste/compound. You need to have a bucket of water and a cloth drenched in water to wash it off very quickly before it bites the baked paint though – LOL. Not something I would recommend unless you’re willing to go the whole hog and sand it right down if it all goes wrong 😮

    Hi Hugh,
I have used spray on oven cleaner in the past , to remove painted lettering,
it normally does’nt interfere with the original finish.
    cheers, mike

just so you know …. if for example he starts rubbing his eyes….
    oven cleaner is caustic soda.

‘oven pride’ , comes in a box, as a gel- with a big plastic bag that you put your trays and that in and let chooch.
    i.e. a gel that’s easier to apply.
